EVERYTHING BUT THE STRESS (HEBER VALLEY)
By Rob Bhatt
Nov 28, 2006
Approximately 15 minutes south of Park City, Heber Valley is another area that offers quiet respite in the shadow of majestic mountains. Slightly north of the town of Midway, Soldier Hollow hosted cross-country skiing and biathlon events during the Olympics, and the facility is now open to the public.
Along with a 36-hold golf course, a lighted tubing hill with a lift and cross-country skiing, Soldier Meadow also offers groups the opportunity to compete in guided biathlon competitions, using real rifles on the Olympic shooting range.
Golf, hiking and horseback riding are among the recreational opportunities available in the summer, while cross-country and downhill skiing and snowmobile tours are among the area’s popular winter pastimes. Heber Valley's abundance of recreation provides a true playground for all groups, whether as a side dish for the conference/meeting, or as a part of the agenda with team-building and fun group activities (Heber Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center; hebervalleycc.org).
The region’s first resort continues to thrive in Midway. Founded as Schnieitter’s Hot Pots by in 1886 by Simon Schneitter, a Swiss immigrant, Homestead Resort (homesteadresort.com) today offers 94 rooms, 27 suites and 23 condominium units, along with 13,000 square feet of flexible meeting space. The onsite amenities include an AVEDA Concept Spa, two restaurants and an 18-hole golf course, though it may be best known for the geothermal springs that fill a 55-foot wide crater on the property. Guests can soak or even Scuba dive in the warm, therapeutic waters that fill the crater.
The Wasatch County Event Center opens this month, giving Heber Valley a 45,000-square-foot multipurpose facility ringed by 1,800 stadium-style seats.
Dolce International also celebrates the grand opening of Zermatt Resort & Spa. Adjacent to Homestead Resort, Zermatt (224/28,000/ zermatt.dolce.com) is designed to resemble an alpine village with abundant courtyards and patios connecting its three hotel buildings and Matterhorn Conference Center. An additional 13,000 square feet will be available in a pavilion designed to serve in many capacities, including as a sports venue and an exhibition space.
In the 1860s, a wave of Swiss immigrants moved to the area, and today, the Heber Valley town of Midway celebrates this part of its heritage by hosting its annual Swiss Days celebration over Labor Day weekend.
