Destination Guide | Lake Havasu City
LAKE HAVASU CITY, ARIZONA (ALL DIFFERENT ANGLES)
By Stefanie Hoffman
Internationally recognized as the home of the London Bridge, Lake Havasu City is a growing meetings destination—best suited for small to midsize meetings—with lots to see and do. The city also hosts 25 hotel and resort properties and more than 2,500 guest rooms ranging from economy to luxurious. With Lake Havasu in its backyard, the city serves as both a playground for the water and desert enthusiast alike, with everything from golf and boating to hiking, hot-air ballooning and jeep tours. And with more than 300 days of sunshine a year and more than 400 miles of lakeside coastline, you’ll likely find yourself more outdoors than in.
You could start with an outing on the green. Lake Havasu has some fantastic golf—with the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and desert—at surprisingly reasonable prices. The Emerald Canyon Course (emeraldcanyongolf.com) is an 18-hole, par 72 championship course, with a four-star rating by Golf Digest.
Some of the city’s most unique venues are right on the water itself. With warm desert weather, take your group out on a Dixie Belle paddlewheel (928-855-0888), a river party boat that can accommodate groups up to 128, and enjoy cocktails as you glide through the channel under the London Bridge.
At the convergence of the Sonoran and Mojave deserts, you’ll have ample opportunity to explore the vast and expansive surrounding landscape. “When they think desert, they think Sahara. But they couldn’t be farther from the truth,” says Jarrod Lyman, vice president of Lake Havasu City Convention and Visitors Bureau (golakehavasu.com). “People are amazed to see how alive the desert is.” If your group is eager to roam, take them on a professionally guided Sonoran Desert Tour (outbackadventures.us), past historic mines, waterfalls and ghost towns.
Or see the desert from a different perspective—in the air. Take a one-hour hot-air balloon ride (wanderlustballoons.com) and soar gently across the desert. Then be treated to a Champagne toast and a “first flight” certificate when you land.
