  • Greater Las Vegas Gets A Facelift

    By Chuck Kapelke

    March 05, 2013

A few years ago Fitzgerald’s Casino & Hotel was not the kind of place a meeting planner would consider to host a business group. Sure, the 638-room property had a fine location at the eastern end of the Fremont Street Experience, the pedestrian mall built around downtown Las Vegas. But in keeping with its roots, Fitzgerald’s was all about the casino, and the “luck of the Irish” leprechaun theme didn’t exactly lend the hotel a corporate-serious vibe.

  • 3 Days in Reno & Lake Tahoe

    By Maxine Cass

    January 29, 2013

East of the mountains and pine forest, where Lake Tahoe straddles the California-Nevada border, Reno stretches over high desert. "People don't realize how close Lake Tahoe is to downtown Reno-Sparks," says Chris Baum, president and CEO of the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority (RSCVA). "It really is a mind-blowing experience to see the lake for the first time. When you come over the ridge and see that incredible alpine lake, it's breathtaking."

  • Quirky Nevada

    By Nikki Gloudeman

    August 30, 2012

Quirky” is a difficult word to peg. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines it as “a peculiar trait: idiosyncrasy.” It’s often associated with “offbeat,” “strange” or “odd.” Others link it with “unique,” though it defines something more specific than that.

  • Mega Mix in the Desert

    By Chuck Kapelke

    February 27, 2012

With more than 39 million visitors every year, Las Vegas is remarkably efficient when it comes to welcoming people into its arms, immersing them in a few days of memorable fun and business, then sending them back into the “real world.” And in many ways, that’s what a meeting planner’s job is, too. But when it comes to meetings, efficiency is only part of the story. The challenge is to pick just the right mix of ingredients that will make a program unforgettable while also delivering an effective business program that will demonstrate a clear return on investment to the client.

  • Engage, Relax, Repeat

    By Nikki Gloudeman

    January 31, 2012

There are a lot of ways a meeting can go wrong, and two of the most common are diametrically opposed to one another. On the one hand, an event can be too boring, with not enough adrenaline-rush activities to keep attendees excited and engaged. On the other, it can be so jam-packed with stuff to do, attendees end up feeling exhausted.

  • Orginal & Wild

    By Chris McBeath

    May 31, 2011

Few places in the U.S . are as anomalous as Nevada, and perhaps no more so than Las Vegas, which thrives on surprise. But look beyond Vegas, and the state of Nevada also defies expectations.

  • What Happens in Vegas...

    By Nikki Gloudeman

    February 28, 2011

It’s safe to say Las Vegas’ reputation precedes it. The city’s unbridled entertainment and nightlife scene, exemplified by its successful “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” campaign, is typically the first thing people think of. And to be fair, this perception isn’t off base. With its world-class headliners, glitzy attractions, endless gaming options and chef-driven dining, Vegas is a prime spot for good times—the equivalent of a playland for adults.

  • Mountain Meetings, 24-Hour Fitness

    By Erin Bernell

    January 28, 2011

There’s a reason Reno-Lake Tahoe rolls so easily off the tongue. Collectively, the neighbors pack a whopping punch of year-round exploits, 24-hour gaming and entertainment, millions of square feet of meeting and event space, and lodging ranging from full-service luxury resorts to quirky mom-and-pop outfits.

  • Laughlin, Nev.

    By Jessie Fetterling

    November 30, 2010

Just 46 years ago, Laughlin , Nev ., consisted of a single, boarded-up riverfront motel and bar. The settlement, then known as South Pointe , was left in disrepair after the construction workers who built the Davis Dam evacuated the area for other projects. Ready to cash in on the land, though, was owner of Las Vegas’ 101 Club, Don Laughlin , who purchased the 6.5-acre property for a mere $250,000. In less than two years, what’s now known as the Riverside Resort offered all-you-can-eat chicken dinners for 98 cents, 12 slot machines and two live gaming tables.

  • Big-Time Glitz, Small-Town Charm

    By Nikki Gloudeman

    August 03, 2010

At night, Reno, Nev., becomes a sea of glittering lights. Signs for iconic hotels such as Harrah’s sparkle beside those for the modern El Dorado and Silver Legacy. There are shimmering billboards, a bright neon sign for the historic Terrible’s Sand Regency Casino Hotel and two soaring Circus Circus towers.

  • Great Value, Great Fun, Great Meetings

    By Lisa Plummer

    June 23, 2010

These days, when it comes to meetings and events, the Silver State appears to be a treasure trove of opportunity, choices and value.

  • Why Vegas? Why Now? Why Not!

    By Carolyn Koenig

    February 23, 2010

Reinvention is nothing new to Las Vegas. Its history can be described as a series of dynamic eras, each bigger and bolder than its predecessor, each changing its look and character.

  • Hit One Out of the Park

    By Carolyn Koenig

    July 23, 2009

“Reno, not Vegas for our annual convention—huh?” That was the skeptical reaction of some long-time attendees, says Arlene Lawson, executive director of the Western States Roofing Contractors Association. But the glitzy city to the south had priced them out of the destination, and she needed a good alternative.

  • Nevada, the Sky isn't Falling

    By Carolyn Koenig

    May 29, 2009

Unlike Chicken Little, we’re taking a less flustered approach to the industry’s recent fallout (although, we admit, the economy and negative perceptions about meetings have been pretty big acorns!).
