Often referred to as the Forrest City, Rockford has more to offer than just woods. The history-packed region boasts an array of unique architecture, unusual public art and of course, manicured public parks.
The Lake-Peterson House is the former residence of Pehr August Peterson, a Swedish born business executive and philanthropist. During his time living in Rockford, he founded the Swedish American Hospital, an institute that he left his home to post mortem. The Lake-Peterson House is in the style of Victorian gothic revival and has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Anderson Japanese Gardens has been recognized as being one of the finest Japanese gardens in North America by the Journal of Japanese Gardening. The recognition was mostly due to its truly authentic yet inventive aesthetic. The garden was designed by Hochi Kurisu and adorned with angel sculptures by Carl Miles.
Nearby, the Burpee Museum of Natural History is where you can fine Jane the Rockford T-Rex, an entirely assembled fossil specimen of a small T-Rex. Jane acts as the center piece of the museum exhibit, Jane: Diary of a Dinosaur that explores the behavior and temperament of a juvenile T-Rex.
