Historic Durham, N.C., Bank Building Could Become Hotel

A Louisville, Ky., company has proposed turning the historic Hill Building in Durham, N.C., into a 125-room boutique hotel, art museum and restaurant. The developer, 21c, already operates a similar “museum hotel” in Louisville and has projects in development in Cincinnati and Bentonville, Ark. Among the hurdles facing the proposal is the fact that the building is wrapped up in $5 million of public incentives already awarded to its current owner, who would sell the property to 21c and remain a minority partner. The 17-story art deco skyscraper mainly housed banks from its construction in 1935 until 2006. newsobserver.com
