Destination DC, Washington, DC
Washington, DC, has a new, powerful, history-making addition on the National Mall for meeting attendees to enjoy during their trip to the nation’s capital. The Smithsonian’s free National Museum of African American History and Culture opened to the public on Sept. 24. The experience begins outside: The building’s exterior was inspired by crowns used in West African art. Inside, find eight levels (three underground) housing 37,000 objects and 11 exhibitions showcasing art, history and culture from the African Diaspora to present day. Coveted objects include a Jim Crow-era segregated rail car, Harriet Tubman’s personal artifacts, Muhammad Ali’s headgear and Michael Jackson’s fedora. This museum, years in the making, is truly a standout excursion for groups.
