Kristen L. Adamo

President, CEO, Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau

Creativity, Empathy, Energy

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: There’s a wonderful neighborhood pub across from the Rhode Island Convention Center called Murphy’s. It’s a local landmark whose owner, Ruth, is the unofficial Mayor of the city. At lunch one day, she came over and sat down, which was not unusual. But, on this day she thanked me and told me that the work that the CVB does has helped her keep her team employed and that one large-scale event that we did brought in enough revenue that she was able to put a new roof on her building. To me, that was an example of how meetings can be an economic driver for the city and I was proud to have played a part in helping a small business thrive.

Welcoming Strategy: I like to be collaborative. Our office is very much a team and I love when someone comes up with a great idea that isn’t in their usual scope of work. I think young people often get overlooked in a collaborative dynamic and I pay special attention to make sure they feel empowered enough to share their thoughts. Providence is a smaller city and we all know each other, which I consider a strength. We often collaborate with like-minded agencies on projects that benefit the city, the planner and the visitor.

Next Goal: We’re really delving into the visitor experience. The way in which people make a travel decision, what they want to do when they get here and how they move around has shifted post-pandemic and we want to make sure that we are not only meeting the needs of the visitor but also anticipating needs that they haven’t even thought of yet.

Adaptability, Belonging, Experience

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: When I left an industry position, I felt lost. Like I didn’t know my place in our industry any longer–feeling as the position defined who I was in the industry. This sense of being lost afforded me the opportunity to find myself and where I belonged in this industry: as an engaged industry professional. I was called on to volunteer for several industry organizations and that was the moment. Being selected for leadership roles made me realize I belonged for who I was, for what I brought to the table, not the position I held.

Welcoming Strategy: The best compliments I have ever received are from three individuals who all told me I made them feel comfortable and allowed them the opportunity to belong. These examples are professional in my workplace, personal in my life, and personal in my volunteer roles. I truly believe everyone has something they can bring to the table and there is always something we can connect on as individuals. I have an empathetic aura and never want people to feel uncomfortable or alone. Listening is key to this experience and being approachable is the best place to start.

Next Goal: I recently took a step back to see where I was spending my time and it allowed me to re-evaluate resources and learning potential. I needed perspective and focus to see where my efforts were headed. That reflective time allowed me to fine tune and see where my industry passions are. I have a goal of getting more involved with the incentive side of my role, by relationship building with those in this industry and fine tuning best practices I am learning from experienced individuals. The goal is to eventually obtain the Certified Incentive Travel Professional (CITP) designation.

Senior Vice President, Fenway Park Events, Boston Red Sox

Inclusive, Experiential, Uplifting

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In 1996, I was recruited to work at the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. Four months into my time there, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts flagged the hotel. It was a transformative experience for me because of their approach to thoughtful hospitality and company culture. They came in hot with a complete and detailed training program on how to deliver service and, more importantly, training to take care of each other–to focus on the people so that we could concentrate on the guest experience. It was a whole new approach to delivering experience for me–first focusing on the people delivering the background, making the magic, surprising and delighting. I was enamored with service and the little things that leave a lasting impression. That is when I knew I belonged in the meetings/hospitality industry. My soul was set on fire, and it is still burning bright 28 years later.

Welcoming Strategy: For my team, it’s so important to create a space where team members feel valued and seen and accountable–to give them the tools to do their job, to make sure the vision and outcomes you’re looking for are crystal clear, and then get the heck out of the way and let them take it from there. It’s a cliche but it’s true–hire people who are more intelligent than you and let them do their thing. For events, we spend much time focusing on thoughtful and gracious service–simple and sometimes easily forgotten. My goal is to make sure my team members understand that how we welcome guests/attendees/stakeholders to an event is one of the most critical moments of the event. You get one chance at a sense of arrival and welcome experience. Eye contact, pro-active gracious verbal welcome, name usage, when possible, ease of arrival/directions and anticipating needs. In life, if you see people, I mean truly see them–and slow down and hold space for them. It’s appreciated, recognized and unforgettable.

Next Goal: I am so excited to be partnering on leadership development content with my People & Culture team. I am in love with providing a framework and training for new leaders, emerging leaders, and seasoned leaders to tackle the hard stuff, have the challenging conversations and make progress. At the same time, I am invested in a year-long master class to study storytelling and speaking in public. It’s a passion project of mine to help people find, recognize, and own their true strengths so they can “make their mark” in the workplace.

Danielle Cirami-Gillis

Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, PRA

Grace, Grit, Fortitude

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: A moment is fleeting, yet in hospitality, certain individuals evoke a true sense of belonging. Hospitality revolves around people – the dream makers, the believers, and the people who see the future talent and embrace it. One year post-college, Bruno Giaccio, Sr., a tradeshow luminary, (may he now rest in heavenly peace), invited me to explore the Jacob Javits Center’s inner workings in New York City. His quick wit and inspiring words, “kid, you want to learn events, come with me,” resonated and amidst the whirlwind of our tradeshow loading in, off I went on his bright yellow cart! He invested time and shared invaluable tools, solidifying my dedication to connecting people through live events. Bruno’s mentorship epitomized the industry’s spirit, igniting my passion and sense of belonging in the meetings world.

Welcoming Strategy: Hospitality at the truest meaning is my love language. Coming from an Italian family, the door to my home and office was and still is always open. Inviting people in, creates a welcoming environment, and I always encourage honest and open dialogue, try to provide solutions and yet, be completely honest and fair. Passion and partnership are inseparable, which is evident in enduring 25+ years of professional relationships, many colleagues who now….are a part of my family. I take pride in the events I’ve sold, managed, and launched, embodying these principles. For me, making everyone feel welcome involves not just words, but a genuine commitment to connection, transparency, values and growing together, which in turn makes everyone feel like they belong.

Next Goal: My upcoming goal is rooted in personal experiences, juggling the responsibilities of being a mother of two, a breast cancer survivor (and thriver!), and maintaining a corporate career. Fueled by a clear vision, I aspire to bridge the gap between navigating serious life issues and sustaining a fulfilling career. My journey has emphasized that health is our greatest wealth, yet its also marked by the peaks and valleys of balancing it all. In the face of challenges, some individuals played crucial roles in my healing, while others did not. Therefore, specifically for the hospitality industry, I aim to establish a supportive framework or safe space that seamlessly integrates personal and professional lives, prioritizing well-being. Through a private, open, and honest network, my goal is to create an environment where individuals facing significant health challenges can share and support each other through whatever journey they are embarking on.

Yingka Chou

CEO, Design Architect, Master Plans Events and Designs, Inc.

Exploratory, Dynamic, Engaging

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: When I left my job working for Hyatt Hotels and seeing how difficult it was to part ways with my clients, it was clear then that my role was more than just providing an event and sleeping space. Spending time and getting to know my clients is what kept them coming back to work with me despite better rate and amenity options at other places. By understanding client needs and a vendor/venue side of things means being able to create opportunities for long term partnerships.

Welcoming Strategy: A smiley and warm demeanor goes a long way. Asking how one’s day was or what’s going on in life and actively listening and responding with genuine interest creates a positive and beneficial relationship. This also allows for open and honest conversations that might otherwise sometimes be difficult to have and feel embarrassing or uncomfortable.

Next Goal: As a veteran in the events and wedding industry for over 15 years, I plan to continue assisting and being a resource in building their personal brands, business and journeys. My company also trains interested individuals to become a wedding and event planner through in-person workshops. I hope to be able to make this available as an online resource and also coach individuals who are genuinely engaged in building their professional and personal skills.

Geraldine Coutinho-Meyers

Associate Director of Sales and Events, Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort Spa & Casino

Innovative, Engaging, Inspiring

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: It was 1990, and we had just opened the hotel and had our first group visit.  I had spent months meeting with the client, vendors and hotel staff to ensure we were ready. Our client had a lot of expectations and anticipation of the group’s needs was always top of mind. I knew our resort reputation would be built on this moment. When it was over, and I saw the smiles of delight from our client and our team, I knew I had something to offer to this industry, and it was me–I had found my calling.

Welcoming Strategy: I believe in creating a welcoming environment by being true to myself. Authenticity creates a genuine and comfortable atmosphere that encourages open and honest communication. It allows others to relate to you on a personal level and fosters deep connections. Embracing authenticity is important to me, as it’s a valuable trait that can positively impact both social and professional settings.

Next Goal: My goal is to become a Regional Director of Sales & Events with integrated life coaching skills. This will enable me to create a supportive and empowering environment for the team.

Carolyn Creek-McCallister

Senior National Sales Manager, Visit Park City, UT

Kindness, Passion, Authenticity

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Little did I know my first job out of college at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in their PR/Advertising department would evolve into a great career in our industry. The journey took me to hotel sales/marketing positions; a large territory sales position; co-owning and operating the Woodside Inn B&B in Park City; and for many years now with the Park City CVB as their Senior National Sales Manager. Having worked in many facets of our industry, I feel blessed and grateful for the opportunities, experiences and adventures I’ve had. Because this is a people/relationship profession, I’m thankful for the friendships I’ve developed along the way.

Welcoming Strategy: The way I approach all areas of my life is pretty simple. Smile, make eye contact, pay attention to people, listen to them, be genuine and be present. (put the cell phone away!) Diffusing conversations with humor and not taking myself too seriously also helps us connect. Being reliable, understanding, optimistic and caring are traits I keep in my toolbox to build relationships and make people feel welcome.

Next Goal: An ongoing goal is to contribute and create memorable experiences for our guests in Park City. Along with the emphasis today on health, wellness and mindfulness at meetings, it also resonates into my personal life. I never want to stop learning so I can grow and apply this wisdom to be the best version of myself. One of my personal goals is to offer my service and skills where I can make an impact in some of the worthy and amazing organizations in our communities. By taking risks and trusting my instincts I plan to continue enjoying the ride.

Plan Every Detail

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I enrolled at UNLV as a business major.  After the first semester, I transferred into the hotel program and with the very first class, I knew I was home. I loved every single moment and seized every opportunity to volunteer, network, hold office and immerse myself in the hospitality network that is Las Vegas.  Many of those early contacts have become mentors, referrals and friends.

Welcoming Strategy: I want to make each and every person feel like they are the most important person to me at the moment. If that person walks away feeling like they were heard, they were acknowledged, and they are valued, I have been successful in the interaction.

Next Goal: Public speaking–I would like to add “keynote speaker” to my repertoire and have an impact on the industry I love so much. After more than 20 years of experiences, successes and failures in both operations and sales, and particularly in business development, I have a lot to draw from to help other people be successful. You want to know how to get out there and meet customers? The right people? I can help with that.

Ali Daniels

Chief Marketing Officer, Senior Vice President, Visit Seattle

Everyone is Welcome

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The most beautiful part about this industry is I’ve always felt like I belonged here. I came from the extremely competitive agency world where in order for you to win, someone or someones had to lose. Here, competition only exists to uplift, never to discourage. The moment I started I felt this warmth and support from our local hospitality industry and the meetings industry as a whole. My counterparts in other destinations and I are always celebrating each other’s wins, borrowing brilliance, and sharing knowledge so that we continue to push this industry to make events magical.

Welcoming Strategy: Sincere invitations. With my team, I ask intentional questions that invite honest engagement. I don’t say I have an open-door policy and keep my door closed. There is a sincerity in my words that I take very seriously. With our events, we take the same care to ensure we meet people where they are. Small touches like pronoun pins that mean nothing to some people, but everything to others. One insincere invitation can create a domino effect of mistrust which could take years to remedy.

Next Goal: We are working with a number of partners to ensure Seattle is as accessible as possible. This includes doing an audit of our downtown hotels, attractions, restaurants, transportation, and beyond to ensure people of all abilities can navigate our city with ease and confidence. Our partners will help us make necessary improvements and share our offerings with travelers. Won’t this world be even more fun when all people can experience it without worrying about availability of resources, tools and considerations?

Sensory, Exceptional Experiences, Feelings

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I don’t think I can pinpoint just one. However, tagging along with my mother, who was in non profit event planning, really opened my eyes. The details, the excitement and the thrill of event day: it all came down to that. I used to watch how much she impacted the community through her events and expos and that was really enough for me = seeing the impact.

Welcoming Strategy: We are all in this together and it takes a village to put on an event. Everyone has their own unique strengths, weaknesses, ideas and passions–let those shine through. I love to see diversity, embrace the challenges and learn from one another. You can always add new knowledge to your back pocket, no matter what age. So always keep an open mind and make sure to smile. And, say thank you!

Next Goal: Although school wasn’t my strongest suit, I would love to start participating in being an adjunct professor at some point in my career. I’m so grateful for my teachers and mentors along the way and want to instill knowledge I have learned to those up and coming rock stars.

Carolina Data

Director Of Sales, Vine Hospitality

Innovative, Personalized, Cathartic

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The moment I truly felt like I belonged in the meetings industry was during my first major conference. As I walked into the bustling convention center, I was immediately struck by the energy and excitement in the air. Seeing the intricate setup, the attention to detail, and the seamless execution of the event made me realize that I had found my passion. I knew then that I wanted to be a part of creating these transformative experiences for others and making a lasting impact in the industry.

Welcoming Strategy: In order to make everyone feel welcome, I believe in a genuine curiosity of learning about everyone’s passion. I make a conscious effort to listen, be present and value everyone’s opinions and ideas, fostering an atmosphere of collaboration and respect. I also strive to create personalized experiences for each team member and event attendee, ensuring that they feel seen and heard. In life, I make it a point to practice empathy and kindness, treating everyone with the same level of respect and making them feel valued for who they are.

Next Goal: My next goal is to expand our company’s reach and establish Vine Hospitality as a leading provider of event services in new markets. I am currently working on developing strategic partnerships and building relationships with key industry players to help us achieve this goal. Additionally, I am focusing on enhancing our technology capabilities to streamline our processes and provide even more personalized and innovative solutions for our clients. I am excited about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and am committed to driving our company’s growth and success.

Ariel Dorsey, CMP, CMM

Vice President, Events, Association for Corporate Growth

Focus, Collaboration, Kindness

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Growing up I always found myself asking “how could we do this differently?” or “how could we make this better?” I am sure my parents and teachers found it overwhelming, but when I realized I could make a career out of constantly analyzing, assessing and improving situations, I knew this was the industry for me. The opportunity to continuously improve on a plan year after year, event after event, spoke to me, and I have never looked back.

Welcoming Strategy: I constantly remind my team that although it feels like you are alone, or the only person worried about the tiny details, that is never the case. What makes all events special is the intersection where all the worrying, evaluating and overthinking converges, and all our preparation and hard work creates something spectacular. I live by the philosophy that We are all in this together.

Next Goal: My goal is to find the space for silence. Although my team has been virtual for 4 years, we still struggle with balancing our time. There is always a need to collaborate, but we continue to find ourselves on numerous back-to-back calls, with a lack of time for focused work. I want the team to be able to be creative and focused and not feel the need to work outside the workday just to get uninterrupted time. I know the balance is achievable!

Lauren E. Eck

Regional Director of Catering Sales, Texas, Wolfgang Puck Catering

Client-centric, Cutting-edge, Engaging

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In 2009, I joined Design Cuisine in Arlington, VA, immersing myself in remarkable events with top industry professionals. While the team’s talent serving presidents, dignitaries, and CEOs made a lasting impression, the turning point for me was on July 4, 2009, at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Despite not being the most creative event, working on the rooftop, presenting an elevated American menu, and a patriotic cocktail became the moment I knew this was the right industry for me. Watching the D.C. fireworks, I felt immense pride contributing to such a special celebration, solidifying my passion for creating memorable moments and affirming my desire to be part of this industry.

Welcoming Strategy: In cultivating a welcoming atmosphere within my team, events and daily interactions, I prioritize transparent communication and listen to diverse viewpoints. I celebrate my team’s individual strengths and ideas, fostering a culture of collaboration and respect. I actively support my immediate direct reports and the broader team involved in orchestrating successful events. By championing their growth and acknowledging their contributions, I aim to create an environment where everyone feels valued and motivated. My commitment to fostering a positive team dynamic extends beyond immediate objectives; it’s about creating long lasting connections and empowering individuals to thrive. Through my dedication, I hope to inspire others to embrace collaboration, innovation, and mutual support in their professional journeys.

Next Goal: My ambition is to become the DFW NACE President in 2025, building on my current position as President Elect for 2024. As a testament to my dedication, I plan to attain the Certified Professional in Catering and Events (CPCE) certification through NACE National. This certification not only signifies my commitment to excellence in the food and beverage industry but also enhances my expertise in the field. Through strategic and empathetic leadership and continuous learning, I aspire to contribute significantly to the growth and success of DFW NACE while advancing my personal and professional development within the National Association for Catering & Events.

DeLauren Everett, CVENT Event Management Advanced

Sr. Manager, Tech Events, Lowe’s Home Improvement

Experiential, Creativity, Inspire

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: There have been many times throughout my career that I felt l belonged in the meeting industry, however, 2023 was the year I received multiple mainstage recognitions along with an exceptional performer bonus for my work. It’s one thing when attendees share how much they loved and enjoyed an event, however, it’s another thing when your leadership is constantly showing they value and appreciate the impact you’re making. 2023 was that year for me. Shamelessly, I would attend Smart Meeting events, and would bring back a lot of inspiration including suppliers, experiences and design ideas that really propelled my events forward.

Welcoming Strategy: There is value when diverse audiences are represented in life, work environments and at events. From the inclusion of various cultures of food, to decor and even attire, I always try to theme my experiences with consideration of the audience. What small (or big) details can I incorporate that make attendees feel their presence is valued? We all deserve to be represented and it’s an incredible feeling when inclusion is a natural thing, not something you have to fight for. When you walk in a room and know you are wanted there through the look and feel, that’s your confirmation.

Next Goal: In this season, I am excited to strengthen my leadership muscle as it relates to managing mid-career level planners. I’ve managed Jr. level planners over the years, but I’ve got an opportunity brewing (shhhh…) to work with planners that have more professional experience. I look forward to building and structuring this new team and mentoring them as they grow to become senior level planners, however, I also look forward to gleaning and learning from them. I’m a lover of leadership, mentoring, and knowledge sharing, so cheers to new beginnings!

Aly X. Fernandez

Associate Vice President of Destination Services, The Palm Beaches

Curated, Elevated Experiences

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In 2017, as I started my hospitality career, the Regional Airlines Association had their meeting scheduled after a hurricane had passed through The Palm Beaches. Despite minimal impact to the area, there was apprehension within the association regarding holding the meeting in the destination. Through several discussions, we devised a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program that entailed supplying essential toiletries to our western communities. The execution of this initiative, where we not only enhanced the experience for attendees but also distributed provisions within our communities, marked the moment it all came together for me as a destination services leader.

Welcoming Strategy: I find that my principles permeate across every facet of my life. I am committed to embracing life’s opportunities, confronting challenges directly, relishing moments of prosperity, and maintaining resilience during adversity. This philosophy extends to my interactions with customers and my team. By adopting an active listening approach, employing thoughtful questioning, and fostering an environment where individuals feel genuinely heard and understood, I guide my actions to consistently make my team and attendees feel welcomed while delivering positive outcomes for all.

Next Goal: In 2024, I aim to actively contribute to The Palm Beaches’ strategic initiative of expanding sustainability and accessibility programs across the meetings and events hosted in the destination. My profound interest in these areas aligns seamlessly with this objective. Simultaneously, I am committed to optimizing the utilization of AI tools in our Destination Services processes, thereby enhancing the overall experience for group attendees while improving operational efficiency within the services team.

Interactive, Relevant, Encouraging

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I had the unique opportunity to help plan an event to create awareness for “children without wheels” and an inability to ride a bike. I was humbled by these children and young adults when they were given the platform to learn to ride a bike for the first time. Their excitement was contagious and the reward of being part of this event was an experience I will never forget. I have a new appreciation for the phrase “It’s like riding a bike”…and reflect on that day frequently to find strength and encouragement when I need it most.

Welcoming Strategy: I am a firm believer in the “Golden Rule: Do unto Others as You Would Do unto Yourself” and find that this example is reflective of how I approach most every relationship whether new or existing. All people want in life is to feel welcome and sometimes all it takes is a smile. Presenting a smile when you enter a room typically breaks down most barriers and certainly presents a calling card for yourself as someone approachable.

Next Goal: As I currently find myself as an empty nester–my next goal for this year is to find my new identity.  I’ve been a single working mom of an only child for 30 years and held that title as my prized possession and purpose in life. Now, I need to identify a new light, while looking forward to the unknown surprises along the way…I remain emotional about it just the same. I can only hope I can continue to use my gifts of connecting people and sharing the passion I have for doing so throughout the journey.

Innovative, Inspirational and Impactful

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In the dynamic landscape of the meetings industry, every challenge presents an opportunity for innovation, which I love. I remember when my passion for crafting remarkable events merged with my professional journey, solidifying my place in this industry. Amidst operating a whirlwind of global events. I witnessed their profound impact, fostering lasting connections. and I realized I was hooked on business events. It’s not just a career; it’s a canvas for unforgettable experiences and enduring bonds. My relentless passion fuels my drive to grow the industry and nurture new talent eager to embrace the world’s best industry.

Welcoming Strategy: This business is all about the people. The foundation of every event is a curated, talented mix of creatives and logistical wizards who come prepared to collaborate and go all-in to produce an incredible event. I welcome my team with respect and appreciation for the memorable moments I know we will deliver. Success requires empowering your team and listening to all angles and points of view to emerge successfully. This principle holds for everything in life. I strive to create an inclusive environment where everyone’s perspectives are valued, fostering beautiful connections and great memories and leaving the world a little brighter.

Next Goal: My next goal is to further develop our world-class DMC Alliance, bolstering support for rebounding regions and facilitating growth across our 300+ Alliance Member family. Simultaneously, I aim to leave a positive mark on those around me, fostering happiness and appreciation. Whether through crafting exceptional events, nurturing collaborative teams, or spreading kindness, I’m committed to making a meaningful difference in my team, family, and business. Each interaction and event offers an opportunity to leave a positive impact, infusing smiles, gratitude, and memorable moments, ultimately leaving everything better than I found it.

It’s Go Time!

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Early on in my hospitality career I worked for a sporting event in collegiate football, the Capital One Orange Bowl. My role was in team operations, collaborating directly with coaches, players and team staff to help bring the week-long series of events surrounding the championship game to life. Being fresh out of college, little did I know I was getting my first shot at “executive care” by spearheading the curation of several high-touch, high-profile events that catered directly to a C-Suite level audience. Stepping foot onto the field for game day, seeing months and months of hard work come to fruition through the eyes of our attendees and their families–that was my first taste of the #eventslife, and I haven’t looked back since.

Welcoming Strategy: It all starts with connection. The moment you begin to feel comfortable in an environment is when guards come down and people open up. In events, the experience starts from the first touchpoint; such as pre-program during the registration process where we personalize the experience for each different attendee type. Educating attendees with the information they need prior to coming onsite helps to make people feel welcome and more comfortable because they know what to expect beforehand. Kicking off a program by greeting your audience with a smile, high-energy and knowledgeable staff, a comfortable environment, all of these touchpoints help contribute to the overall success of a memorable event experience. You can’t fake the frequency!

Next Goal: My goal is to contribute towards the advancement of and to help make an impact on this industry, no matter how big or small those contributions may be. I’m passionate about continuing to elevate the  meetings and events industry so that we can pass the torch onto the next generation of dreamers and leave it better than we found it. This year, I’m focused on becoming more actively involved in industry organizations by serving in leadership/board roles that are focused on mentoring rising stars so that we can pave the path just as our predecessors did before us. There is only one way (up) from here, and the future is looking bright!

Felicia Haynes, CMP

Director of Sales and Marketing, Embassy Suites by Hilton Memphis

Inspire, Illuminate, Innovate

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: One of my high school teachers suggested that I become a corporate meeting planner because of the way I dressed…my clothes were very color coordinated during those years. I had limited knowledge of the industry but as fate would have it, I got a job in a hotel and fell in love with the industry. Early in my career I knew that meeting and convention planning was for me because I would get a genuine rush of adrenaline every time my groups were in-house. When I work on an event my enthusiasm for the occasion is pure because it comes from within!

Welcoming Strategy: It is my fundamental belief to present the best, no matter the situation. Whether budget constraints or venue location there is always an opportunity to create an experience. It is paramount for me to ensure that everyone is welcomed and embraced regardless of color, creed, religion or socioeconomic status. I have worked with budgets of $1,000 that required disposable plates and I made sure that event had the best in disposable goods. I have also worked with budgets that were over $1 million and we were able to create a mass production for that one event. Always present the best!

Next Goal: My future goal is to one day teach hospitality in higher education. College interns working at my hotel encouraged me to consider teaching at the college in my area. The interns all expressed that what was taught in the classroom (theory) is different than firsthand (practicality) experience. I am currently pursuing that goal by completing my degree at Johnson and Wales University and look forward to helping shape the minds of future meeting planners and hospitality executives. My “dream” goals are to work on the event planning team for the Grammy Awards or a major entertainment company!

Colleen Healy

Senior Manager, Global Congress Excellence, Bristol Myers Squibb

Innovation, Adaptability, Approachability

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Despite a passionate love for both healthcare and events, I fell into this industry unplanned. My original plan to go to med school no longer felt right, so I trusted my gut and applied to a role featured in Monmouth University’s career newsletter. Twelve-hour days, global travel, exposure to multiple therapeutic areas and a diverse network of industry partners later, it was impossible to not fall quickly and madly in love with the work. Intertwined by a common bond of cultivating an impactful attendee experience, and in my industry, also working with the underlying goal of serving the unmet needs of patients, my colleagues became family, and the rest was history.

Welcoming strategy: Being able to instill a sense of calm. There is nothing more powerful than a colleague, event lead, or friend who is able to encompass this type of energy.

Next Goal: Where do I start?! I have a continuous goal to grow myself personally, as well as professionally within the pharmaceutical industry. Most prominently, I aim to continue to think outside of the box, pressure test, and surround myself with good people! I would also like to allocate more time for community service (particularly in the animal welfare sector) and use my event experience to support with nonprofit fundraising efforts.

Shana Hurkala

Managing Director, Wings Unlimited

Creative, Innovative, Unexpected

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: As a young photographer, I worked for meeting planners to document attendee travel during incentives. During a few particularly complex incentives through multiple ports in the Mediterranean and Aegean, I found myself stepping out from behind the lens to help guests. From navigating their way down the narrow streets of the souks, to confirming their dietary needs prior to their arrival at lunch with a view of the Parthenon, I knew that the guest experience was as important to me as the beauty of the event.  Service comes naturally and the passion for detailed logistics was in my blood.

Welcoming Strategy: The Wings team is one of great comradery, industry knowhow and support. I lead alongside them with creativity, humor and the willingness to get my hands dirty. I support the team to find their creative voice and never settle for what has been done before. We achieve great things together leveraging our unique perspectives and providing top level service and creative events. Our attendees can see we love what we do and can feel the passion we bring.

Next Goal: I have high aspirations for Wings as we push towards four decades of luxury event services. We have enjoyed great success and longevity in a roller coaster of an industry and have traveled the world. I continue to pursue unique approaches and destinations for clients who see the importance of authentic experiences and true connections. My goal is to harden the foundation of Wings reach and support the amazing team members to reach their individual goals.

Communicative, Methodical, Caring

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Early in my career, I had the opportunity to work with a large collegiate student event, which took almost two years to plan in Washington, DC. The final night of the conference, Dec. 31, the ballroom was filled with over 2,000 students and the overwhelming presence of the Holy Spirit touching so many young lives was one I will never forget. This was the moment that I felt I belonged in the meetings industry and knew how much conferences can change lives.

Welcoming Strategy: When a team member is added to our Arrowhead family, each of us shares our specific areas of expertise. This allows us to create rapport and learn about them and their gifts. We use small internal teams of 2-3 people to better serve our ministry partners. For our partner events, we begin by reviewing the vision. We collaborate with our industry partners and negotiate all terms of the contract. With consistent communication, including joint zoom calls, and a pre-con will create a successful event for all. To be invited back to a city is one of our main goals.

Next Goal: One of my next goals will be to understand more about how hotels are using AI to bid or turndown an RFP.  With limited hotel supply and strong demand, it is becoming more difficult to find availability at a price groups and attendees can afford. Learning the details to include in the RFP that are not part of the Revenue Manager’s review process may be key to ensuring a bid is obtained. Another goal, but something I am passionate about, is mentoring new planners to the industry each year.

Creativity, Participant-Centered, Tailor-made

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I read “The Art of Gathering” by Priya Parker, and it completely changed my perspective on events. My trainings with dear facilitators also showed me that events, seen as gatherings, and appreciating the time people invest in your event are precious. This gained more meaning when after an event, participants would share with me how inspired they feel to become change makers. Once, a woman told me that the event had motivated her to open her own business. That was when I knew no matter the distance through tailor-made, participant-centered creative events, we could really inspire action.

Welcoming Strategy: We live in a world where our attention span is about eight seconds. Thus, in order to connect with someone, we need to listen with curiosity, be open and avoid judgements. That is how we build empathy. Without it, we could not deliver events or team meetings where attendees become participants instead of just being an audience. Having active participants is a game-changer, because it allows for more opinions and shared experiences, which translate into a mentality of “what you think and say, matters.” That is a milestone because it goes beyond feeling welcomed. It recognizes your worth.

Next Goals: I meet entrepreneurs and feel inspired by them, but I still have not launched my own business. My next goal is to open a firm that runs curated events with out-of-the-box formats, but also function as a network for other people interested in program facilitation to share my experience and knowledge through trainings and courses, especially for women interested in acquiring new skills.

Jennifer Kauf

Global Head of Marketing and Creative, FIRST, A Global Brand Experience Agency

Creative, Collaborative, Pragmatic

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: As an avid lifelong concert-goer, I have a connection to the power of a live shared experience; There’s an element of the “unforgettable.” And for the majority of my career, I’ve been involved in the creative strategy process, shaping the right experience to effectively deliver a message. After selling my first pitch and then walking into a venue to see it come to life–that brought it all together. I was able to help shape an environment that can only be provided through an event. It’s a powerful thing to see the manifestation of what just started with an idea into an experience that can inspire people.

Welcoming Strategy: Making people feel welcome is about giving a sense of belonging, feeling valued and being heard, whether providing the space for team members to share ideas, regardless of role or background or focusing on attendees’ needs to shape the most impactful event. My approach is to be a good listener, and in turn, that allows me to be a strong advisor. I feel everyone has creativity to be tapped into; I’m invested in the individual, appreciate different perspectives, and encourage team members to try things in their own styles. I also approach all lanes of life with a balance of being direct while respectful and a heavy dose of humor.

Next Goal: My role recently expanded beyond marketing and communications, adding oversight of the FIRST strategy team and Global Creative Studio.  As a fierce advocate for creativity throughout the agency, I’m focused on taking things up a level for clients and for teams to have fun and feel fulfilled in the process. This also marks a return to my creative strategy roots and I’m excited to collaborate with pitch teams again. I live my #eventlife off-the-clock as a board member of the non-profit, EB Research Partnership, which is focused on research for treatments of a life-threatening skin disease my niece suffers from. This year’s goal: bring my family’s fundraising event, which has raised $1MM+ to date, back to being live.

Lisa Kaszubski, HMCC

General Manager, Meeting Achievements

Innovative, Goal-Oriented, Engaging

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In my early career, I began with social event planning. I recall the numerous times that I stood in the back of the room where I saw my clients get married. I truly invested my time and energy into making sure that their moment would be one that was magical for a lifetime. At every ceremony, you could find me there with a tear in my eye. Knowing that I played such a large role in one of the biggest days of someone’s life; that is what hooked me to this industry!

Welcoming Strategy: I encourage my team to use their voice and I always want to make sure they feel heard. I want to make sure they feel empowered and confident in who they are and what they have to offer. I desire to create an environment where people, at work, at events and in my personal life can feel like they can be 100% who they are and embrace their strengths and imperfections, as that is what makes us all so beautiful.

Next Goal: I am furthering my education and pursuing my CMP. I have been in this industry for almost 20 years, and I am excited to continue learning and growing with the rapidly changing Events industry. Over the last few years, I have witnessed much innovation and desire to develop events in a way that benefits all. It is powerful to see the focus on what is best for the learner, how to keep them engaged and wanting to come back for more. I am passionate about building relationships and moments that last a lifetime.

Deanna Kirk

Assistant Director of Sales, The Venetian Resort Las Vegas

Personalized, Creative, Unforgettable

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Witnessing my first event unfold from conception to execution, sparked the realization that the events industry was my calling. Crafting seamless experiences became my passion. Through this journey, I discovered the art of building both personal and professional relationships, connecting with diverse individuals in the pursuit of creating memorable moments. Knowing that what we do sparks collaboration, we facilitate the environment where brilliant minds converge, exchange ideas, and inspire innovation. The events industry is where I am meant to be.

Welcoming Strategy: A welcoming team environment involves active listening, recognition, supporting new ideas and being open minded. Individual strengths take the spotlight, creating a sense of belonging. Event professionals know they are a priority, and every interaction is authentic. Their needs are addressed quickly with honest, genuine interest. Practicing empathy, embracing diversity and demonstrating kindness is my personal culture. My approach centers on creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued, heard, and respected, fostering a positive atmosphere. Kindness and making others feel welcome is a way of life.

Next Goal: My next professional goal is guiding new sales managers to thrive in hotel sales, blending mentoring with teaching engagements to shape the mind of future leaders. On a personal note, I am on a mission to hike through every U.S. National Park; in addition to finding a balance that fuels both professional and personal passions.

Kerry Lambert, CMP, MTA

Chief Operating Officer, Soundings

Personal, Authentic, Meaningful

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I love that our industry is so welcoming. Joining Meeting Professionals International (MPI) over 15 years ago was when I felt that I really belonged. I was immediately welcomed by several current members who took an interest in me as an individual and recruited me to get more involved with the local chapter. Those first interactions left such a positive impression and provided the encouragement for me to continue my volunteer participation. It eventually led to serving on the MPI International Board of Directors.

Welcoming Strategy: Success and making everyone feel welcome in events and leadership comes down to connection. Understanding someone’s goals, experiences, and way of working ultimately helps you to add value and build connection. Strong connections build trust, strong teams, and successful events. I also believe that injecting fun into team meetings and events is crucial. While we take our jobs seriously, incorporating levity and joy into my professional and personal experiences is an important part of my life.

Next Goal: Professionally, I am pursuing a coaching certification so that I can better serve Soundings customers and freelancers. Supporting women to advance in their careers, especially in the meetings and events industry, is something that gives me tremendous joy. There is still a lack of diversity and representation at the highest levels of our industry. Coaching and a focus on self-development can help to bridge this gap and propel women to the next level.

Jerrine Lee

Vice President of Sales, Visit Richmond, VA

Engaging, Impactful, Collaborative

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The day Visit Richmond, VA hired me as a convention and sports services manager felt like divine alignment in my career journey. A pivotal moment of confirmation came in January of 2022 when I was promoted from director of sports development to vice president of sales. While sports tourism remains a passion, this new role expanded my appreciation for the meetings industry. I remember attending Destinations International Convention Sales & Services Summit shortly after my promotion and being embraced and welcomed by meeting professionals. This experience solidified my sense of belonging in the dynamic world of meetings and conventions.

Welcoming Strategy: Several years back, I was introduced to and embraced the ‘Platinum Rule,’ which revolves around the principle of treating others how they want to be treated. I prioritize creating an environment characterized by active listening and thoughtful questioning to foster understanding of different perspectives. Teamwork is more than a concept; it embodies the culture I cultivate within my team. I’m dedicated to creating a secure space for team members to express ideas, fostering confidence that their contributions will be recognized and respected. This not only values diverse viewpoints but also cultivates a collaborative atmosphere, ensuring everyone feels welcomed.

Marjaneh Majarwitz, CMP

Owner and CEO / Strategic Site Selection and Meeting Management Consultant, MarjaNet Inc

Collaboration/Teamwork , Commitment, Multisolutions

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: After going independent, it was in my second year, 2016, after working on a very large and complex project that was very successful. I was acknowledged for my contributions, not only by my clients, but also by other meeting professionals, hotel partners, and suppliers. This is when I knew I had the right operating model. From that point, feedback which reinforces my approach helps me know I am serving my stakeholders well and feedback which suggests ways to do things better helps me continue to improve my services. Both are equally valuable.

Welcoming Strategies: When I work on a program, I partner with all involved parties. Making everyone part of the team, respecting their opinions and input, setting goals and timelines, and holding each other accountable, allows everyone on the team to shine. Afterall, we all have the same goal:  the success of the event. Every person has their own perspective on how they like to be welcomed, whether in a professional setting or in personal life. I try to determine what would make each person most comfortable and establish a connection/ relationship. I learn about them, acknowledge them, and keep in touch with them.

Next Goal: My background is in engineering and technical project management. There is so much innovation these days in artificial intelligence and it will change our industry. I want to be involved in using these types of tools to add value in repetitive tasks so I can focus more time on strategic items. Also, I have always felt a fulfilled personal life complements and strengthens a fulfilled professional life and my goal is always to spend more time with family and friends, get more stamps in my passport, and volunteer with charities and helping others.

Daisyruth Malasan

Director of Events, Signia by Hilton San Jose

Passion, Positivity, Empathy

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I am hospitable by nature and being in the meetings and events industry fuels my purpose. Early on in my career, I was unexpectedly given an opportunity to move into meetings and events after being in operations and sales for about six years. It didn’t take me long to realize that meetings and events are where my passion lies. Being part of creating a memorable experience for others, seeing creative ideas come to life and witnessing connections that I’ve helped facilitate is incredibly gratifying.

Welcoming Strategy: I proactively encourage each team members’ career growth. I let them know that they matter and that their input is valued. Early in my career I’ve had the pleasure of working with a number of team members who have left an everlasting impression on me, helping me to move forward by testing my resolve, providing me with opportunities to think critically and showing me how to adapt in a changing environment. While I create a work environment that helps my team achieve their own goals, I also recognize that without them, I would not be able to accomplish my own goals.

Next Goal: My next professional goal is to take on more opportunities that would enable my growth to become a top leader and a mentor in the meetings and events industry, including becoming a certified meeting planner (CMP). My next personal goal is to continue setting a positive example for my daughters, teaching them to be confident, strong women and go on with their days with intent to succeed.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I felt like I truly belonged in the meetings industry after designing and developing my first large program, and later joining our Operations team on-site to see it all come together, executed flawlessly.

Welcoming Strategy: I’ve been in my team’s shoes, so I do my best to show my understanding of their struggles, as well as excitement of their successes. At events, in life, and with my team, I lend a positive, helpful attitude. I put emphasis on working as a team whether it’s internally at 360DG, with our vendor partners, or with our clients on their programs.

Next Goal: My current goals are to continue to improve and create efficiencies and creativity in our Design & Development and Creative Services departments at 360DG.

Debra Mategrano

Regional Sales Director, Encore

Personalized, Charismatic, Motivational

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Years ago, I was introduced to a client whose first words to me wereI hate all things technical. I don’t understand it, and everything is too expensive.Throughout the proposal process, I was able to relay the what, why and how surrounding the technical side of her event. By the end of her program she informed me that for the first time ever, she understood the AV component, and was actually looking forward to putting her next event’s technology together. Knowing my communication style impacted her so positively really solidified my sense of belonging within this industry.

Welcoming Strategy: In elementary school, I was identified as one of the kids’ teachers could count on to partner “new kids” with so they wouldn’t be stuck eating lunch or playing on the playground alone. My empathy and desire to ensure everyone is having a good time started early on and has been sort of a cornerstone pillar in my life. One of Encore’s core values is “Valuing people” and it resonates with me greatly. I extend a sense of welcome, and show value by listening to others, encouraging people to participate, and by connecting people to help build a community.

Next Goal: I’m a big believer in seeing the best in every situation; be it tough or otherwise. I go at life knowing everything will always work out for me. Because of this mindset, I look at both personal and professional goals with the same rose-tinted glasses, and I don’t put too much detail around my goals. I keep it simple and focus on always learning, growing, and most importantly, having a good time.

Heather Miller, CMP, Cvent certified

Director, Meetings and Events-East Region, Direct Travel, Inc.

Strategic, Collaborative, Engaging

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: After spending 10 years as the marketing director of an association, I decided to move to third-party and began working at Direct Travel. The first conference I planned and executed for a new client was when I felt I had made the right decision in changing jobs. Being able to plan and facilitate an engaging conference, hearing the participants thank you for an amazing experience and the client saying they could not have done the conference without you, that is when I truly felt connected to the meetings industry, and I was right where I was meant to be.

Welcoming Strategy: I encourage open communication within our team, so our department is always a safe place to grow and learn. As a remote workforce, we foster a supportive learning environment that encourages interaction and trust. Clear communication amongst the team, within event operations and with customers is a vital key to success.

Next Goal: Our Meetings & Events department came together as a region as a product of the pandemic vs. being in siloed offices. We have built an amazing team and I am ready to take it to the next level cultivating lasting client partnerships, streamlining processes and integrating data and operations.

Ali Murray Frost

Director of Sales & Marketing, Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas

Nothing is Impossible

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I’m a third-generation hotelier on both sides of my family so this business is, quite literally, in my blood. I was fortunate to grow up living in hotels, started working in hotels at fifteen, and landed my first events job at seventeen working for my college. It would be futile to pinpoint a moment when I felt I belonged, as it’s always felt predestined that this is the only place I belong. Though perhaps it’s this nomination that has really made me feel validated to know someone else has recognized my dedication and accomplishments.

Welcoming Strategy: My approach to inclusivity is twofold. First, I prioritize diversity by actively seeking personal and professional relationships with people of varied backgrounds. Additionally, I aim to set an example of transparency and remaining true to oneself so others can feel empowered to do the same. This authenticity sets the foundation for trust in any setting. Openly sharing vulnerabilities, goals, and expectations reinforces a culture of honesty and holding each other accountable. Ultimately my goal is to create environments where everyone feels valued, supported, and motivated.

Next Goal: I am currently leading a team to position our hotel as a destination known for healing retreats. In collaboration with our supporting departments, my goal is to elevate the standard of spa and wellness offerings in the Las Vegas market. In seeking expertise from world-class practitioners, we are able to anticipate the trends at the forefront of the industry and incorporate those learnings into crafting a weekend experience unlike anything else our city has to offer. We aim to curate transformative journeys unique to each guest which will encourage repeat visits.

Stephanie Pappas, STS

Vice President of International and Sports Sales, Meet Boston

Strategic, Collaborative, Creative

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In my first hospitality job out of college during a large-scale global event in Boston, I made the connection that our events were not just wins for the hotels and venues that hosted them, but for the entire community. When I discovered what a positive impact events hosted had in growing and developing the local economy, creating and sustaining jobs and generating tax revenue, I knew I had found the path I was destined to follow.

Welcoming Strategy: I believe in being kind, a good listener and a positive influence to those around me with the hope that I am making a difference in someone’s day or even their life.

Next Goal: No matter how many world-class events Boston hosts, the goal of strengthening Boston’s position on the global stage for meetings and events is one that I will always pursue. As this goal evolves, I find it critical to develop, lead and inspire the next generation of authentic, curious and compassionate leaders that have the same passion for hospitality and community that I have so that the future of our industry and destination is strong.

Raya Roll, Global MBA

Director of Sales and Business Development, Vail Resorts

Innovative, Collaborative, Sustainable

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The moment I felt a true sense of belonging in the meetings industry came during a large international conference I had orchestrated from the ground up. Seeing attendees from diverse backgrounds engage deeply with the content, networking passionately and sharing insights, I realized the power of creating meaningful connections through thoughtfully planned events. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the event’s seamless organization and innovative sessions. It was then I understood my ability to bring people together, facilitating not just conversations but lasting relationships and knowledge exchange. This realization solidified my commitment to and passion for the meetings industry, knowing I could make a significant impact.

Welcoming Strategy: I cultivate an environment of inclusion and respect by actively listening, valuing diverse perspectives and ensuring everyone’s voice is heard. I prioritize personalized interactions at events and within my team, recognizing individual contributions and celebrating unique backgrounds. I incorporate accessibility and varied engagement methods to cater to different needs and preferences, ensuring all feel valued and included. In life, I approach every interaction with empathy and openness, showing genuine interest in others’ experiences and perspectives. By fostering a culture of acceptance and understanding, I aim to create spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and appreciated, contributing to a more inclusive community.

Next Goal: My next goal focuses on developing high-performing teams that are dedicated to sustainability within the events industry. I aim to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration and innovation where team members are empowered to bring their best ideas forward. This involves fostering an environment that values diverse perspectives, encourages professional growth, and supports risk-taking. We can lead by example by integrating sustainability into every aspect of our work, from planning eco-friendly events to implementing sustainable business practices. My objective is to develop a team that excels in delivering exceptional events and contributes positively to our planet and community, setting new benchmarks for sustainability in the industry.

Teresa Savage

Vice President of Business Development, See Monterey

Inspirational, Engaging, Memorable

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The defining moment of belonging in the hospitality industry occurred early on in my career when I seamlessly engaged the hotel I was working to book a complex program, which helped foster confidence in my ability to gain collaboration within groups . Witnessing the engaged discussions, excitement of our team, and the positive feedback validated my contributions. The energy in the hotel reflected the success of my meticulous planning and collaboration. It was in that transformative environment that I felt an intrinsic connection to the hospitality industry–a realization that my efforts were integral to creating impactful experiences for planners and prosper productive teams. This sense of belonging fueled my passion for shaping teams and fostered a deep sense of purpose within the hospitality industry.

Welcoming Strategy: Creating a welcoming atmosphere hinges on being authentic, open communication, and genuine empathy. With my team, I prioritize active listening and recognizing individual strengths, ensuring each member feels valued. During events, I cultivate a warm ambiance by creating an inspirational atmosphere.  In life, I extend kindness and understanding, appreciating diverse perspectives. By embracing differences, encouraging collaboration, and celebrating achievements, I instill a sense of belonging. This disposition not only strengthens team dynamics but also extends a genuine welcome to everyone, fostering connections that go beyond professional settings and resonate in everyday life.

Next Goal: My lifelong pursuit has been happiness. This process includes cultivating positive habits and fostering meaningful connections. Embracing gratitude, engaging in activities that bring joy, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance contribute to my sense of fulfillment. Prioritizing self-care, such as exercise and mindfulness, supports my mental and emotional well-being. Connecting with loved ones, pursuing passions, and setting achievable goals create a sense of purpose for me. Additionally, practicing kindness and being present in the moment can enhance my overall disposition. The journey towards happiness is unique for everyone but I find if I consistently integrate these elements into my daily life I live a more fulfilled and content existence.

Jean Schulte, CIS

Director of Sales, Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach

Elegant, Breathtaking, Memorable

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Early in my career, I landed my first role in banking as a financial analyst working in the San Francisco Financial District. After two years of strengthening my financial skillset, I realized that the hospitality and hotel industry was calling my name, and subsequently joined a pre-opening team for a luxury 140 room hotel in Northern California. That was 35 years ago and the first of three hotel openings I’ve been a part of. I can honestly say that no two days are the same in this wonderful business and still fly by far too quickly!

Welcoming Strategy: I have always been a curious person, a lifelong learner and “student of life.” Giving whoever is in front of me my full attention and interest has helped me create genuine, authentic relationships with both customers and the team I am blessed to serve every day. I always remind myself that I want to warmly welcome guests to the hotel as if they are walking through the front door of my home.

Next Goal: I have many goals I am pursuing. A few are to support my team with achieving their personal and professional goals and “pay it forward” as so many have done for me, travel to as many countries with my husband and two sons as possible, and enjoy every minute of every day!

Lauren Singer Perry

Associate Vice President, Lamont Associates

Authenticity, Integrity, Fun

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: After being laid off from 23 years in hotel sales in 2020, I left the industry. The president of SITE Southeast invited me to attend the annual kickoff in 2021 even though I was doing something completely different; when I walked into that room I felt like I was home. Seeing all of the connections and friends I had made over decades in the meetings industry made me realize that my heart was in hospitality and I had to find my way back. One month later I joined Lamont Associates and now serve on the board for SITE Southeast!

Welcoming Strategy: A big smile, looking people in the eye, and listening more than talking are a few ways I think I make people feel welcome. One thing I’ve learned recently is to show vulnerability and get past the surface conversations; it’s amazing the connections people can experience just by being open and sharing their challenges with each other.

Next Goal: Last year, I started posting short videos of the hotels and destinations I visited to educate my clients and help showcase my experiences. It’s called Splorin’ with Lauren and in 2023 I created videos of 12 very different destinations around the world from Dubai to Lake Tahoe. When my colleagues and I meet new people they often know who I am from the videos! Now, my husband and I have started a production company and we’re expanding Splorin’ with Lauren and other ideas to share with more people.

Sharilyn Toko

General Manager, Caribe Hilton

Flexibility, Increase Engagement, Care

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry:  I grew up surrounded by the hospitality industry. This was also amplified by my dad’s work in the airline industry. Spending many hours in airports and hotels, I was always observing interactions; the workers had a talent for helping people, coordinating events and experiences. I was intrigued by how each individual impacted each guest by motivating, teaching and engaging others differently. Living in Hawaii, it became inevitable that I would eventually work in a hotel. This passion for serving others and always creating unique experiences has been part of my personal and professional satisfaction, and I can even say that it translates organically into my life.

Welcoming Strategy: I’m always trying to find different ways to evolve and how to add more flexible work schedules for our hospitality members, what things can be introduced into the work area to reduce stress, increase engagement, healthy living and eating. At the property level, I’ve promoted “wellness” by introducing and participating in Cardio Tennis and walking activities. Giving back to the community is crucial. Soon we will have a 5K for a charity, and meditation classes for our team. Our operational meetings include games to challenge knowledge; I’ve also introduced interactive activities for the management team (cooking classes). All of these are surprise activities that help to relieve the typical meetings and turn this into networking and team building between the departments.

Next Goal: My goal is to embrace life, help others along the way, and live without regrets. I apply that in work and in my personal life. Also, I strive to elevate our destination to the next level and make sure we are contributing to the economy of our island. I recommend you to always inspire others while achieving goals, but most importantly, to share with your team all the milestones that you have overcome. Life is going so fast that taking risks and being a decision maker will be productive for your team and your operation.

Crystal Terwilliger, CMP

Sr. National Sales Manager, MGM Grand

Innovative, Personalized, Collaborative

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The moment I truly felt a sense of belonging in the meetings industry was when I grasped its broader impact on livelihoods. It wasn’t just about orchestrating events; it was understanding the interconnected web of individuals relying on this industry for their employment. As a native Las Vegan, I have seen seasons of abundance and, at some points, scarcity, during which I realized the significance of my role in sustaining a network of livelihoods in the meetings industry. The responsibility to bring successful events to MGM Grand and the city of Las Vegas wasn’t just professional; it held profound implications for the well-being of many. This awareness solidified my commitment, as I recognized the collective effort shaping not just events, but the lives of those dependent on them.

Welcoming Strategy: Creating a welcoming atmosphere is ingrained in my approach. Beyond a warm smile, I prioritize active listening, fostering inclusivity, and appreciating diverse perspectives. In team settings, I encourage open communication, ensuring everyone’s voice is valued. During events, I promote a sense of community by facilitating networking opportunities and acknowledging individual contributions. In life, I extend kindness, understanding, and support. Embracing the uniqueness of each person, I strive to create an environment where everyone feels heard, respected, and appreciated. Ultimately, it’s the genuine connections and shared moments that contribute to a culture of warmth and inclusiveness.

Next Goal: In the next phase of my journey, my primary goal is to persist in being a positive role model for my team and the expansive meetings community. My focus extends towards fostering a collaborative and supportive environment, with a specific emphasis on empowering young women and working mothers within our industry. I am driven by a profound belief in the need for more examples of successful working mothers. By sharing my experiences and navigating the intricate balance between career and family, I aspire to inspire and pave the way for others. This mission fuels my dedication to contributing to a more inclusive and supportive professional landscape.

Hope Valentine

President, CSI DMC

Creative, Comprehensive, Sustainability

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: After being in the industry for over 28 years, there are countless examples of why the hospitality industry has been my lifelong career passion. In 2008, I was involved in a large hotel opening and working with a committee of individuals where I noticed a strong sense of camaraderie and the shared zeal for creating exceptional experiences. The discussions, the energy, and the expertise were impressive. I felt like I had found my path with an industry of professionals who are passionate to make events amazing. When I walked into the final night gala we had created, I teared up with pride.  These moments are the reward for all of the hard work.  Seeing something you envision come to fruition, and happy attendees, is one of the best gifts I can receive.

Welcoming Strategy: Authenticity is key. By being true to yourself and your clients, and by approaching your relationships in a genuine way, you’ll build trust and respect that will carry over into every aspect of your life. I approach relationships with an open mind and open heart.  Asking engaging questions to get to know someone is important. But taking the time to stop and really listen to the answers shows caring and engagement.  I want everyone around me to feel heard and appreciated. At CSI DMC we focus on inclusivity and being true team. This involves building a sense of community and giving people the benefit of the doubt that they have tried their best. We are a human touch business and things may not always go as planned, but as a team, we can always come up with a solution.

Next Goal: Embracing the privilege and responsibility of leadership, I am honored to serve as the President of this incredible company (CSI DMC). Together, we will chart new horizons, foster innovation, and build a future where we nurture relationships and provide an exceptional client experience. Our journey is a collective endeavor, and I am excited to lead and collaborate with an exceptional team of over 164 professionals.  One of our top company goals is to provide clients with more sustainable event solutions.  My personal goals are to continue my philanthropy with Hope For More and continue to carve out time for my husband, adult children and new granddaughter.

Carolina Viazcan

Vice President of Sales, Visit Greater Palm Springs

Impactful, Experiential, Inclusive

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I embarked on my journey in the hospitality industry as a sales coordinator, uncertain of where it might lead. It didn’t take long for me to discover my passion for engaging with clients, the thrill of closing deals, and the art of creating unforgettable moments. I’ve been fortunate to find a tight-knit hospitality community that feels like a second family, and 24 years later I still love it!

Welcoming Strategy: Every individual possesses a unique story, and through genuine connections you can uncover what is important to them and common ground. I’ve learned that by giving people respect, fostering open communication, and treating everyone with kindness—in addition to a warm smile—can go a long way in making everyone feel welcomed.

Next Goal: The next goal I am pursuing is related to my family. I have two daughters and one will soon head off to college. I want to make sure I continue to prepare her to be independent and savvy on her own, in addition to enjoy the remaining time I have left with her and build a strong bond with her sister.

Strategic, Adaptable, Resourceful

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In 2009, I led the Southeast Education Conference for our MPI South Florida Chapter, a volunteer-driven event. An hour before kick-off, I was unexpectedly appointed Master of Ceremonies, entrusted with engaging the audience. In a memorable twist, I impromptu crafted a compelling “Dear Diary” segment, guiding attendees through the intricate process of organizing the two-day event with dedicated volunteers. From inception to execution, I candidly shared trials and triumphs, creating an immersive experience. On that stage, I not only facilitated the event but also transported attendees into the challenges and successes of orchestrating a conference, leaving a lasting impact on our collaborative journey, vividly recalled by participants today.

Welcoming Strategy: I foster inclusivity by lending an open ear, providing honest feedback and offering encouraging words in both team settings, events and life at large. My body language consistently conveys a welcoming demeanor. Recognizing the human need for belonging, my lifelong purpose is to create spaces where individuals feel welcomed and empowered to make decisions, assured of my unwavering support. A warm smile is my additional tool, breaking barriers and inviting connection. In essence, my approach encompasses attentive listening, sincere encouragement, and a genuine commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment, making everyone feel valued and supported in their endeavors.

Next Goal: To be better than I am today, more aware of how I treat those around me but most importantly how I treat myself. Be kinder to my body and mind and know that there’s more for me out there whether in the event industry or elsewhere and keep my options open when exploring those opportunities to become a better version of who I am today. There’s no limit to my growth, only a limited mindset that would hold me back.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In a crowded conference venue, a transformative moment occurred when my efforts as an event planner seamlessly resonated with a client’s vision. The synergy between meticulous planning and the client’s aspirations created a harmonious atmosphere. Witnessing the client’s excitement and satisfaction during the event was a defining instant that solidified my sense of belonging in the meetings industry. The shared achievement of bringing their vision to life and exceeding expectations forged a unique connection. From that point onward, I recognized the profound impact of understanding and elevating a client’s objectives, fostering a sense of belonging through collaborative success in the dynamic world of meetings and events

Welcoming Strategy: I cultivate a welcoming environment in every aspect of my life. Within my team, a genuine commitment to understanding each member fosters a sense of belonging. Empathy and open communication create an inclusive space where diverse perspectives thrive. During events, I extend a sense of confidence to attendees, ensuring everyone feels valued and comfortable. Whether in professional endeavors or daily interactions, my approach is rooted in compassion and kindness. By leading this way, I create an atmosphere where individuals not only contribute their best but also experience a profound sense of welcome, turning every collaboration, event, and moment in life into a shared and enriching journey.

Next Goal: My next goal revolves around enhancing my leadership capabilities. I have recently taken on a global role which gives me the opportunity to expand on my skills. This involves honing effective communication, fostering collaboration and embracing a growth mindset. I aspire to lead with authenticity, instilling trust and motivation within my team. Continuous learning and seeking mentorship are integral components of this journey, ensuring that my leadership skills evolve in tandem with the dynamic demands of the company. Ultimately, my goal is to create a positive impact, fostering a culture of innovation and resilience.

Kind, Authentic, Leadership

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I was given the challenge of executing an “experiential” approach for a 1,000-person conference to create a one-of-kind personalized experience for each attendee. Mind you, this was well before all the technology we have in place today. I tapped into the talent and creativity of my team to design a “WOW” experience from start to finish with customized agendas using a dedicated TV channel, concierge-style registration process, and personalized assistance throughout the conference. The attendees were thrilled with this unique experience, and I was hooked on event planning! That was more than 20 years ago, and I have never looked back!

Welcoming Strategy: I believe genuine kindness has magical qualities in making individuals feel welcome and giving them a sense of belonging. This principle applies to my team, attendees, colleagues, as well as family and friends. The greatest act of kindness is listening with intent so that others feel seen, heard, and valued. My philosophy is to give my full attention, take time to answer questions thoughtfully, and provide support and guidance when needed. As a leader, it is incredibly important to be present and let others know you care about their small everyday moments, their big wins, and certainly their challenges.

Next Goal: I want to become a sustainability leader by providing relevant and trending information to our clients when presenting our sourcing options and have them keep sustainability at the forefront with the hotel selections for their programs. We are starting to track our partners’ sustainability best practices to use for future reference. My second goal is to continue to improve our data integrity and reporting practices. Our current business intelligence tool and initiative allows us to provide valuable information to our hotel partners. I intend to continue and improve this practice to strengthen our industry partnerships and build new ones.

Innovative, Thoughtful, Impactful

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: It’s worth noting that my college degree wasn’t directly tied to meeting planning and consequently, my initial post-college position was not in this field. However, serendipity played its part when my first professional project involved managing the logistics of a fundraiser reception. I immediately fell in love with the intricate process of orchestrating events, specifically the detailed levels of organization and collaborative teamwork towards a collective goal. Crossing the finish line of that project was thrilling and ignited in me a real passion for events. That experience was a catalyst to my professional pivot into what has been an extremely dynamic and rewarding career of more than 20 years in the meetings industry.

Welcoming Strategy: Creating a welcoming environment through thoughtful planning is integral to every event I manage, be it personal or professional. I prioritize learning about individuals’ and/or groups’ interests, acknowledging their unique experiences, and fostering genuine connections. I am particularly passionate about connecting people with similar pursuits and interests, enriching the overall atmosphere, and making it inclusive, enjoyable, and valuable for everyone involved.

Next Goal: My aspiration in the meetings industry extends beyond event execution and into education with my current goals focusing on mentoring and speaking opportunities. Eager to share insights gained from my diverse journey, I am driven by the belief in fostering the growth of aspiring professionals within the field. Simultaneously, embracing speaking engagements allows me to impart experiences, lessons learned, and industry trends to a broader audience. My ongoing goal is to contribute meaningful innovation and inspiration within the meetings industry.

Innovate, Enrich, Purposeful

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: What keeps me hooked? It’s the variety each day brings–different roles, fresh challenges and knowing we are making an impact. But it’s the people and experiences that seal the deal for me. Meeting and working with people from all walks of life and creating moments that others only dream about–that’s the real magic. This industry is a melting pot of ideas and energy, and being a part of this vibrant community is something special. It’s where I found my tribe and where I truly belong.

Welcoming Strategy: When it comes to working with my team and planning events, it’s all about keeping things approachable and authentic. I like to meet everyone where they’re at, encouraging them to bring their own splash of creativity and ideas to the mix. We all know what we do is important, but we aren’t saving lives. We make sure to have a good time, learn from each other, and grow together, adding elements that are innovative or elevated in some way. This approach isn’t just good for culture, it’s key to building a community and making sure everyone feels like they’re part of the success.

Next Goal: I’ve recently earned the Certified Event Designer designation; it was a journey I embarked on last year, learning about a strategic approach to event design, and I’m proud to have achieved it. Now, I’m looking forward to completing my degree while working with the incredible team at Discover Denton. I’m helping to lead the implementation of a significant, long-term project that’s set to elevate our status as a premier meetings destination. Balancing academic pursuits with professional growth in such a dynamic environment is both challenging and exhilarating, and I’m eager to see where this path leads.

3C approach – Creativity, Culture & Climate

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I returned from a year of traveling abroad and took a month-long temp job for an M&E company. More than 20 years later I’m still hooked. We work in an industry that is chaotic, energizing, infectious and while everyone works long and hard, is above all, fun–which is my consistent pulse check for how and where I spend my time, both personally and professionally.

Welcoming Strategy: I fully encourage, appreciate, and thrive on challenges, diverse perspectives and looking to the future with a “what’s possible” filter. While we are constantly drawn into immediate deadlines and daily situations, it is a priority for me to ensure my team and I elevate each other and keep time for “above the daily” conversations to round out thoughts, continue to invent and keep our solutions relevant and fresh. Never settling and constantly questioning in a safe space is an approach that helps me to both personally and professionally thrive, alongside those I choose to surround myself with.

Next Goal: There are many complexities in our industry that can sometimes paralyze us from moving forward. There is also still a lack of investment by many organizations into a Meetings & Events Program at the enterprise level. My next goal professionally is to create some simpler methodologies around ROI and broader organizational impact to “try on” with our customers and in the industry, and while these may not be an end state, they will push us forward and allow us the space to refine and further prove out the value that meetings and events can deliver to organizations.

Energy, Engagement, Details

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In 2011 after a life changing car accident I switched majors from industrial engineering to hospitality management. I was immediately enamored with the course work, joined the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, and two years later became the Dedman School of Hospitality’s Career Fair Coordinator. As coordinator it was my responsibility to source over 100 companies to participate and find 100 dedicated volunteers. This event was an enormous opportunity for students to find their next career path. From planning to execution I was engaged. The day it all came together felt like Christmas and I knew this industry was where I belonged.

Welcoming Strategy: Throughout my life I have always genuinely cared about people and because of that I actively listen during conversations, remember the details, and thank them often. This is how I show up for my team and at events I use the same approach. I engage with attendees, look for feedback in the app, review the survey, apply suggestions into the next event and thank them for their time. I believe it’s important to make sure people know they are heard and valued.

Next Goal: I have learned so much in my current role collaborating with cross functional teams to develop new events and ensure existing events continue to thrive. Now, I want to take it further and grow my impact by becoming global director of events with a strategic team focused on standardizing event design and production. In-person events are here to stay and my vision is to design an events portfolio for each region aligned with their business strategy and sustainability goals. Fast growing companies need a dedicated team to craft the event experience and I can be part of the solution.

Innovative, Collaborative, Detail-oriented

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In elementary school, I wasn’t aware of the meetings and events industry, but reflecting on my past, I realize that’s when my passion for bringing people together began. I eagerly anticipated my birthday parties, taking charge of planning various activities. High school and college brought large house parties! During college, a part-time receptionist job at a group-focused travel agency ignited my interest. Attending The Motivation Show (IT&ME) in Chicago solidified my desire for a career that involved travel and global connections. Since then, I’ve been determined to pursue a profession that allows me to unite people worldwide.

Welcoming Strategy: I promote inclusivity in my team and events by embracing a servant’s heart for all. Authenticity and transparency are my guiding principles in hospitality, where I view myself as working for my team. Encouraging an open-door culture, I welcome questions at any time. Gratitude for mentors motivates me to give back. Emphasizing customer satisfaction, I empower my team for mutual success. My personal events diverge from work affairs; a straightforward Fourth of July hot dog buffet is my style. A welcoming fun event or trip is characterized by inclusive activities, a friendly atmosphere, and engaging experiences that create a sense of camaraderie and enjoyment for participants.

Next Goal: Having spent 34 years in the industry and with our adult children now leading their own lives, my husband and I have fully embraced the empty nester lifestyle. While I have no immediate plans to leave the business, my focus is on effectively mentoring staff and fostering the continued growth of Destination Consultants Michigan DMC services, along with the outbound meetings and incentives segment. The goal is to seize fresh opportunities to apply our passion and expertise, ensuring impeccable execution.
