Susan Adams

Vice President, Engagement Strategy & Corporate Services, Next Level Performance

Inspire, Motivate, Achieve

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The first time I planned an incentive program for Next Level, we had to re-imagine the gala evening event because of inclement weather. We worked around the clock to repurpose decor and to re-engineer a white party on the beach into a dreamscape inside a ballroom. When guests arrived to this otherworldly ambiance, they were completely transported. The music, the lighting, and the decor created a breathtaking environment. I remember the moment the doors opened as one of a great sense of achievement, providing our guests with an elevated experience and exceeding their expectations, even in a moment of difficulty.

Welcoming Strategy: In an industry in which many people are in a hybrid or remote workplace, connecting with people must be intentional. We focus on punch lists, milestone dates and schedules because that’s what our roles demand. Taking time, though, to get to know teammates as individuals is essential. As a leader, it’s important to understand each person’s unique goals and aspirations, and to help them find a path forward. I make sure to use our company’s recognition platform and to reach out individually to those on my team to be sure they feel connected to the team and our purpose.

Next Goal: Any team focused on planning must balance creativity and practicality. Increasingly, my role involves enterprise goals and I am focusing on issues that are important to our clients, such as data security and other contractual compliance. Additionally, I am honored to be the Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Incentive Research Foundation (IRF) this year. Along with my board colleagues and the IRF staff, I am working towards goals to expand our service to the industry and our understanding of motivation among channel partners and employees.

As Pharma Forum 2024 approaches, my excitement builds for the event’s success and for the opportunity to expand my influence as a speaker. This forum mirrors my professional journey, emphasizing the importance of knowledge sharing for our industry’s collective advancement.

Unconventional, Fun and Thoughtful

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: When the pandemic hit! At first, I started describing the economic ripple effects of not traveling to close friends and family, and then I found myself helping people understand the extent of reach that participating in meetings or going on vacations had in any community. Having been in the tourism industry my whole life, I always thought that we were kind of disposable, but those very dark couple of years brought our activity to the front, showed us what gregarious means, the industry became visible and strong, and I got self-reassurance that this is my call.

Welcoming Strategy: I’m curious by nature and I’m always interested in what other people’s experiences have been. I compliment people more often than not. It’s a smooth and easy conversation starter. There is always something to make a positive remark about, and I mean it! You see a lot of new people joining the industry, and offering an introduction, especially at an event, is something I do a lot. When I’m just meeting you, I don’t talk much, I rather listen and maybe throw in some humor. If there’s anything I can do to make your life easier, why not?

Next Goal: I’m currently writing my final papers to graduate from the CDME program offered by Destinations International. Representing a destination is always evolving as the environment is constantly changing and the course focuses on preparing DMO executives to implement vision, productivity and business strategies so our cities can thrive. No matter where you are in life, learning never stops and I do make a conscious effort in being aware of what’s new to stay current. Stay tuned for product development in Santa Ana, coming up!

Memorable, Cutting-edge, Fun

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: It’s actually a point in the planning process, rather than a moment. As a planner, you always have people say “I know you will be glad when this is all over.” And truthfully, I am not. After I wrap a program, I have a void until the next event comes along. I actually miss my clients and our calls. I truly enjoy event planning, the chaos and when it all comes together. I experience true joyfulness when I am onsite, walking the meeting room, setting out name tags. I feel like I am exactly where I am meant to be!

Welcoming Strategy: I make people feel welcome by getting to know them and actively listening. I make an effort to ask the questions about them, to better understand where they are coming from. This is important, because it allows me to create experiences, or conversations that make people feel seen and represented. I encourage team members to share their thoughts, similarly I speak to attendees to hear that unique thing that would make the event memorable and try to make it happen. I allow people to be who they are and celebrate them.

Next Goal: I am really focusing on my personal brand and identifying what my passions are. I am really into technology and extremely interested in AI. So, I am looking for opportunities to learn more and utilize it for my events. Another goal is to do more speaking engagements to share my experience in event planning, in hopes that there are others that share my struggles and successes. I am continuously looking for ways to work on myself and my craft and get true enjoyment from professional development.

Regenerative, Uplifting, Experiential

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Entering the meetings industry midway through my career, I can’t point to a specific “aha” moment when I felt I belonged. It’s been a journey of continuous learning and adapting. Some days, I feel like I’ve got it all figured out; other days, I’m questioning. This mix of confidence and uncertainty keeps me going, always open to learning and growing. In this industry, I’ve realized that the process of figuring things out is where the real sense of belonging comes from. It’s like navigating a road without a clear map, and I’m still finding my way, with a good dose of humor about “growing up.”

Welcoming Strategy: For me, building high-performing teams is about making sure everyone feels valued and included. I believe in the power of every voice on the team, and there’s no handbook for the uncharted territories we navigate. It’s about embracing the unknown as an opportunity. Whether at work leading a team or at home with my young adults, the key is simple: listen. Creating a welcoming space where everyone feels heard is what drives growth, both professionally and personally.

Next Goal: Sustainability and regenerative tourism are more than just buzzwords for me—they’re a deep personal and professional passion. The UN Sustainable Development Goals provide a great framework, offering a shared understanding of where we want to go. My next goal is to weave these goals into our strategy and day-to-day operations, finding better ways to communicate with our stakeholders and clients. It’s not just a goal; it’s a commitment to shaping a more responsible and inclusive future for tourism, one step at a time.

Founder, Mindful Moments

Mindfulness, Meaning, Memories

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: My work gives me the opportunity to give people meaningful experiences with lasting impact. While my words and actions may fade, the emotions and memories associated with the experiences I provide will stay with people. I want people to leave an event energized, motivated and full of ideas. I cherish the quiet moments after the event. For me, this is an opportunity to truly  realize the impact of my work as it is reflected in the camaraderie and connection among attendees.

It goes deeper than industry roles or business strategies. It’s about a sense of elevated purpose and shared experiences. I  know I’m not only orchestrating logistics, I’m contributing to genuine moments that linger in people’s hearts. Belonging, for me, is found in those quiet, joyous moments when our collective efforts transform into memories etched with authenticity and human connection.

Welcoming Strategy: In every facet of my life, I prioritize making everyone feel genuinely welcomed and valued. This is where I believe the art of being present is a critical component to every interaction, both personal and professional. Within my team, I try to practice active listening to cultivate an environment in which every voice is not just heard, but truly listened to.

During events, I emphasize the importance of focused engagement, ensuring that participants feel acknowledged and appreciated. Encouraging mindfulness helps participants feel the depth of connection in every interaction. In life, being a good listener is key to understanding others’ experiences and perspectives. By placing emphasis on attentive and empathetic communication, I strive to create inclusive spaces where individuals feel seen and heard, fostering a sense of belonging that extends beyond team dynamics and event environments into the fabric of everyday life.

Next Goal: My goal is to further integrate Mindful Moments into meetings and events, recognizing the profound impact they can have on well-being. I aim to provide attendees with practical tools to navigate stress in both their professional and everyday lives. By incorporating mindfulness practices, I aspire to create environments that not only foster productivity and engagement but also empower individuals to manage stress effectively. This initiative aligns with my commitment to enhancing the overall experience, promoting a culture that prioritizes mental well-being and connection, and equipping participants with valuable skills they can carry beyond the meeting room into their daily lives.

Randa Griffin

Marketing Manager, Paragon Events

Impact, Experience, Value

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Coming from a marketing background, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I joined Paragon Events. On one of my first programs, I collaborated with our client to create some messaging and gifting initiatives around an incentive program. Throughout that project, things really ‘clicked’ for me. I realized events and marketing have the same goal—to engage and connect people in meaningful ways. From that moment on, I knew events were the best way to put my marketing skills to use and have a positive impact on our attendee experience.

Welcoming Strategy: Working with such a creative and collaborative team has really instilled the idea that “everyone has a seat at the table” and everyone’s input and opinion matters. Looking at things from other perspectives usually leads to improved results, so I make a point to always ask for feedback and input on projects. In marketing and event planning, inclusivity is at the heart of every decision we make. It’s an honor to get to create experiences where people feel welcome, valued and have a sense of belonging—whether through messaging, activities or just the way we communicate with attendees.

Next Goal: The next goal I’m pursuing professionally is to expand our company’s gifting services so we can create memorable touchpoints before, during and after the event. I’m excited to continue pushing the envelope and generating impactful experiences with my incredibly talented team. We’re always looking for the next innovation or activation—anything to elevate our events and attendee experience.

Gina Harrigan, CED

Director of Sales, Caesars Entertainment

Unexpected, Exciting, Memorable

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: When I participated in my first NBA tradeshow, the excitement of planning for our booth and spending time building relationships with planners as well as talking about why my property was the best option, was when I knew I found my calling. Being a part of that show made me realize that I wanted to be part of the meetings and events community. Most importantly, the relationships that I built at that show, introduced me to Caesars Entertainment where I have had the opportunity to grow from a salesperson into the leadership role I have today. I am privileged to now be able to pay that forward and support the next generation of salespeople.

Welcoming Strategy: I lead with compassion. I want to make people to feel cared for and want them to know that what is important to them, is also important to me. By finding out what motivates each person helps me lead my team members and clients achieve their goals.  When my team members, and clients are prospering, I am most fulfilled.

Next Goal: I’ve coined 2024 as my year to thrive! Raising two young daughters through the Covid era has been challenging. I’ve spent the last few years surviving and have had to focus on helping them with the social, emotional and educational catch up that was necessary. My goal for 2024 is for my family to be able to travel to Austria for our best friend’s daughter’s baptism.  It will be so rewarding to be able to have my daughters first experience with international travel to be with our closest friends and family. It will open their eyes and provide them with an unforgettable experience.

Erin Leonard HMCC, CMM, CEO & Founder, Erin Leonard Events

Participant Experience First

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I vividly remember my first role in planning a 5,000-person national conference. The moment I met the participants and saw their genuine joy and delight on-site, I knew all the long nights and stressful days were worth it. My heart and soul were poured into this project, and it was palpably felt and appreciated. That was when I realized that events were my pathway to making a real impact in the world. There’s a profound power in bringing people together, opening minds, and leaving a lasting change.

Welcoming Strategy: Creating an inclusive atmosphere starts with active listening and finding commonalities. I consciously embrace a friendly, open and curious demeanor, often being the first to initiate conversations. My love for asking questions is coupled with a joyful and inquisitive approach to life. Inclusivity is also about accessibility and we integrate universal design principles into events. This ensures everyone, regardless of their abilities, feels welcome and valued. By focusing on accessibility and genuine human connections, I strive to make everyone feel included and appreciated in my team, at my events, and in life.

Next Goal: I’m working towards my CMM certification, with aspirations for the CMP credential next. I’m able to pursue these opportunities thanks to the incredible support of my team at ELE. Concurrently, we’re dedicated to cultivating a fully remote team culture grounded in authenticity. This effort goes hand-in-hand with our goal to expand our portfolio by supporting and elevating more large-scale conferences. These steps are crucial in my journey to enhance our expertise and grow impact in the industry.

Vice President, Marketing, LEO Events

Passion, Intuition, Solutions

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I truly knew I belonged in the meetings industry when I transitioned from the client side to the agency side and joined the team at LEO Events. I first met the LEO team in a client capacity, and I quickly realized I could fully entrust my vision to this dynamic organization. After producing and executing several successful projects together, the stars aligned, and I joined LEO as their VP of Marketing. Surrounded by progressive, creative and dedicated colleagues who pour their passion into client and partner relationships, I gained a profound sense of belonging within the meetings industry.

Welcoming Strategy: I moved around a lot when I was young, so I understand the impact of change and aim to create an inclusive environment where people feel comfortable bringing their full, true selves. Whether at work events or in daily interactions, a simple smile or conversation starter can help people feel valued and included. Fostering diverse perspectives is important to me. I strive to cultivate an environment where individuals feel heard and know that their unique experiences and viewpoints are appreciated. Ultimately, it’s about facilitating meaningful connections and accommodating different comfort levels so that everyone feels respected.

Next Goal: Professionally, I am focused on helping LEO achieve its ambitious growth goals by spearheading the implementation of an updated CRM system and simultaneous launch of our revamped web presence. It’s especially rewarding to oversee large projects from inception to completion and dive into the analytics to ensure we’re being effective. Outside of work, my husband and I recently purchased a small hobby farm with the goal of becoming more self-sufficient. This passion for sustainability influences my work, as I am working with an internal team dedicated to measuring and executing our events responsibly across the globe.

General Manager, Albany Capital Center, ASM Global

Sustainability, Community, Personalization

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In 2008, I won the Event Manager of the Year award from the Rhode Island Hospitality and Tourism Association. This award reflected the time and effort I put into the planning and management of the array of events and functions that the Rhode Island Convention Center hosted and helped jumpstart my career.

Welcoming Strategy: I have several overarching attitudes and ideas that I bring to the Albany Capital Center staff, attendees and partners, as well as those in my personal life, each day. 1. Be present and punctual. 2. Show up and genuinely care for them. 3. Provide individualized leadership and support. 4. Celebrate short-term goals. 5. Follow up and show appreciation.

Next Goal: I’d like to see the Albany Capital Center have an even bigger impact on our local community. Our venue is versatile and located in the heart of the Capital District. It can be utilized for community events, volunteerism, or simply opening the facility to local groups and organizations, showcasing everything that our space is capable of is my goal. I’ve also set my sights on becoming a trend setter when it comes to event experiences in the industry. We will raise the bar and welcome events that are impactful for our guests and attendees in a positive way.

Connection, Innovation, Childlike Joy

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I started my career with a front desk position in a hotel, but my next few roles led me away from hospitality. Years later I began thinking, ‘This is your life, how do you want to spend your days, what makes you happy, fulfilled, and accomplished?’ My answers were clear. I love bringing people together, being creative, and bringing laughter and joy to others. I jumped in headfirst, started three event internships and I knew I had found my calling. Fifteen years later I’m creating meaningful connections and moments of childlike joy for our teammates at Gainsight, Glassdoor’s #1 Best Places to Work 2023.

Welcoming Strategy: My biggest driving considerations are empathy, inclusion, human-first connections, exercising the golden and platinum rules, positivity and humor. We are all in this together and being cognizant that each person is more than the sum of their work persona is key. Every human has an innate desire to feel safe, cared about, feel a sense of belonging, feel like they matter and be happy. These are important aspects to consider when managing a team, working with a peer or talking with your friends. These facets are the goals I set out to achieve when creating meaningful moments that carry a lasting impact that reaches beyond the meeting room.

Next Goal: I love what I do and feel that I am exactly where I should be right now. To further contribute to the industry, I would like to begin speaking at industry conferences, mentoring the next generation of planners, and like most of us planners, work on taking more time for self-care. I will continue to practice Shoshin, which is having an attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions when studying, even at an advanced level, just as a beginner would. This is my guiding light as I continue to innovate for the future of events.

Kimberly Marenus

Director of Events, City Chic Events

Innovative, Collaborative, Energetic

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The first time leading a meeting with C-Suite executives, coming up with out-of-the-box big ideas that I didn’t even know were possible, setting off a cascade of collaborative suggestions from team members, the event blossomed into an experience better than we could anticipate! I felt like I had just unlocked the next level in the meetings industry game. It’s not business as usual; it’s the future, and I’m in it. I’m at the event watching everyone enjoying themselves.

Ideas are flowing like a perfectly crafted brand story, and then it hit me, I’m not just attending a meeting; I’m right in the epicenter of where it all unfolded. I created this moment. I realized I am not just part of the industry; I am actively shaping and defining its unique brand identity. In that space, sensing the vibe, and recognizing our shared purpose–that’s when it becomes clear–this is my place! The energy, the shared vibes, it’s like finding your groove on the dance floor. Surrounded by passionate people, I realized the meetings industry is my jam and understood that this is where I thrive. It’s not just about meetings; it’s about being part of this awesome, collaborative community.

Welcoming Strategy: Creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone requires intentional efforts: open communication, active listening, respect of differences, celebration of achievements and leading by example. Engage in team activities that foster positive vibes and establish a feedback system for continuous improvement. Ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and valued. Lead with a welcoming smile, creating an environment where everyone feels like a VIP. Encourage teamwork and collaboration by promoting a culture of working together.

Emphasize that everyone’s contributions are essential to the overall success where team members work together and share responsibility towards the common goal. Embrace the individuality of each person, maintain open and genuine conversations, and actively listen when someone is speaking. Recognize and appreciate the unique qualities, backgrounds, and perspectives that each individual brings to the table. Sustaining this positive vibe requires continuous effort and commitment from everyone in your teams, events, and daily interactions.

Next Goal: I am eager to explore innovative technologies and trends in the events industry to stay ahead and deliver exceptional results. I strive to create unique and memorable experiences. I aim to leverage my creativity and strategic thinking to design events that not only meet client objectives but also leave a lasting impact on attendees. Another goal is to continue to implement a charitable component attached to all the programs to foster employee engagement and continue to give back to the local communities. In addition, I aspire to drive the growth of the company and client portfolio, while crafting experiences that are not generic but rather distinctive and unforgettable. I plan to explore innovative technologies, incorporate sustainability practices, and stay attuned to emerging trends to deliver cutting-edge events.

Donna Lisa Murray

Director of Business Development, ETHOS Event Collective

Collaborate, Innovate, Integrity

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: A significant turning point for me was when my professional relationships turned into genuine friendships with clients and industry partners. I love seeing the collective efforts of our industry when organizing trend-setting events. Collaborating to create a client’s vision is truly rewarding and inspires me and my team to continue creating meaningful experiences.

Welcoming Strategy: I respect everyone’s role in the workplace and value their ideas and invite them to get involved by attending meetings, networking events and tradeshows. As a board director for a few associations, I welcome everyone to our events, especially newcomers and connect them with other industry peers. We spend most of our days with our colleagues and industry partners and they become an extension of our family outside of the home. When clients see a great team dynamic, they trust us to manage their events.

Next Goal: I’d like to continue ongoing mentorship for young professionals to aid in their growth and success within their careers. I love engaging with recent graduates and professionals new to the industry, to see how I can assist them in advancing their careers to new heights. The guidance I’ve received from my own mentors is what drives me to want to offer the same support to others. Establishing a succession plan for the next generation of industry leaders is fundamental to fostering continued growth in our company.

Cheryl Oswald, CMP, CMM, CEM

Corporate Events Manager, CNH

Innovative, Engaging, Collaborative

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: It was the first large event I had planned by myself, as a team of one for my former company, it was our annual conference for 2,800 attendees and I was in charge of all aspects of the event (event planning, travel, marketing, IT, etc.). While I may not have been personally involved in creating our marketing for example, I was involved in the process and approvals. Needless to say, it was a lot! When the opening session started and our CEO at the time walked on stage, I knew I was doing what I loved and this is the career I wanted. I had fit all the puzzle pieces together and the event kicked off and I just felt a moment of joy that I had done it and I belonged in this industry!

Welcoming Strategy: We do this in a few different ways starting with open communication. We encourage open dialogue where team members feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and ideas and foster an atmosphere where everyone’s voice is heard and valued. We embrace diversity and inclusion in all its forms and celebrate differences and ensure that our team reflects a variety of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences. We continue to actively work towards creating an inclusive culture. We ensure that our events and workplaces are accessible to everyone, taking into consideration any physical or cultural differences. This makes individuals feel considered and accommodated. I look to demonstrate empathy by actively listening to team members and understanding their perspectives. This helps in building trust and creating a supportive environment. We regularly assess and evaluate our team and seek feedback from team members after each event and throughout the year. We are open to making adjustments to improve the overall experience for everyone.

Next Goal: Professionally, it’s continuing to learn and evolve as an event leader. I have been in this industry for 13 years and I would say my goal every year has always been how can I grow and elevate myself. I seek out industry leaders and network with them, I continue to seek out any new certifications that may be relevant to my career, and continue to look for any education that can continue my growth in this industry. Currently seeking my latest certification, Certified Incentive Specialist  through SITE Global.

Detail, Artistry, Innovation

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I was called to lead the social event market at a former hotel and I initially lacked enthusiasm. I always received inspiration from events I attended as a guest and it was there that I uncovered my passion for transforming ideas into vibrant realities and turning empty spaces into dynamic environments. I would always strive to infuse a touch of my imagination into every event I produced, and witnessing the final product through my clients’ eyes has always made me feel destined for this role and for this industry.

Welcoming Strategy: As a leader, there are many times that you need to look past yourself and your own desires. I embrace a vision that includes every guest. I make it a priority to create authentic connections. I am dedicated to ensuring everyone feels valued, included and warmly welcomed at my events. I look for ways that guests can interact within the event and alongside what is around them. I enjoy celebrating each individual on my team and actively seek ways to empower them in achieving their professional aspirations.

Next Goal: I am wanting to broaden my network to cultivate meaningful connections. I have a keen interest in unleashing more innovative event concepts–and undertaking more projects that will challenge and showcase my skills. My goal is to continue pushing boundaries and persistently seeking growth through continuing education opportunities. I am looking forward to earning my CMP this year and embracing every opportunity to elevate my expertise.

Be the Solution!

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I am an avid dancer who is part of a social dance community. The first event I organized was initially intended for about 50 local participants. But word quickly spread throughout the dance community nationwide, and I ended up hosting more than 200 attendees from six states! It was so rewarding to know that I created a fun, memorable experience for fellow dancers without having any formal training, education or industry knowledge. The one-day event eventually grew to an annual 3.5-day weekend dance convention with over 800 dancers in attendance. It was at that moment I knew I belonged in the industry.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The statement, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” is one of my favorite quotations from Theodore Roosevelt. Making others feel appreciated requires showing up authentically, being an active listener, and finding common ground with conversation starters in all spheres of influence. Building a friendly, trustworthy culture helps to foster a safe, inclusive environment and deepens relationships. Furthermore, a warm smile and a word of encouragement also go a long way!

Next Goal: As a servant leader and lifelong learner, I am passionate about helping the next generation of trailblazers. I earned my Master’s in Meeting & Event Management from San Diego State University (SDSU) in 2022. Consequently, I was asked to serve as an Adjunct Professor at SDSU where I am currently co-teaching with my former instructor to educate future industry leaders. As the vice president of communications on the MPI’s Potomac Chapter Board, I want to continue driving positive change and mentoring emerging professionals by helping them discover and pursue their passion in our industry.

Vibrant, Energetic, Exciting

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: As I led with my innovative approach to building global events within my company, I saw a sea of opportunity within the web3 space to set the tone for events in this industry. The need to bring the community together and the subsequent buzz of excitement in the  space affirmed it: my ideas were not just heard but valued. In that instant, surrounded by the buzz from the community engaging with my concepts, I knew I was no longer just an events/meeting producer, but a key player in shaping the future of web3 events. It was exhilarating, validating, and a clear sign that I had arrived.

Welcoming Strategy: I strive to make everyone feel welcome, allow space to practice inclusivity and with empathy. In a team and when planning content programming, I encourage open communication and value each community member’s input. By creating spaces where individuals feel heard, respected and valued, you cultivate a sense of belonging and community, essential for making everyone feel truly welcome.

Next Goal: We’ll create experiences for knowledge exchange and skill development, fostering a supportive environment for learning and growth. Building the community will be central, with networking events designed to strengthen connections and collaborations. We’ll spotlight local teams and products globally in the space, integrating them into our events to showcase and bolster the community. To ignite adoption, we’ll organize interactive experiences and inspiring talks from influential founders builders, sparking new ideas, enthusiasm and momentum. Through these initiatives, Solana Events will be a catalyst for a vibrant, interconnected and thriving community.

Curiosity, Understanding, and Evolution

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I felt the magic at the first event I ever attended. The events industry is the best at making everyone feel like they belong. I love the new ways we are looking at designing events with each guest’s experience in mind. Understanding their values, their boundaries and even their limitations—so we can create that feeling of belonging.

Welcoming Strategy: Listening! Understanding what is important to people—on a team, for an event, or in life is the key to building strong relationships. Listening and retaining what someone tells you allows you to connect more deeply and build trust. The world is changing, and the best way to make sure you meet someone’s needs is to understand them and make them know their voice matters.

Next Goal: My personal goal is to continue to help Maritz be a driving force across the industry. I am fascinated by human behavior and the research around how current and new generations are attending events, so I want to be integral in reshaping how we design events moving forward to meet the needs of our changing attendees. As a mom of Gen Z, I am particularly excited to be part of getting this young generation excited about our industry, both from a talent recruitment perspective and inspiring future attendees.

Senior Director of Events, Region Specialist, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts

Creative, Innovative, Inspirational

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Embarking on my college journey, I chose a business major with a psychology minor, simultaneously working part-time in the evening, specializing in events. This period offered invaluable time for learning and personal development. In my late 20s, I embraced the role of director of convention services in San Diego, and by 30, I joined Hyatt Hotels in San Francisco as director of catering/convention services. This marked the moment I felt a true sense of belonging in the meetings industry. To this day, Hyatt continues to be an unwavering source of support to me, my colleagues, and the event industry.

Welcoming Strategy: At Hyatt, our mission is to “care for people so they can be their best.” Infusing daily life with empathy, both personally and professionally, has the potential to positively impact lives. I strive to extend this care, cultivating a sense of belonging within the team, at events, and in life. Recognizing the value of authentic connections, my goal is to foster an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere to be a positive influence on the lives of those around me, whether in the context of events or within the broader spectrum of life experiences.

Next Goal: In the ever-evolving Meetings & Events industry, our Meetings & Events philosophy, Together by Hyatt, allows us elevate our Meeting & Event experiences better than ever before through four pillars of care: Wellbeing, Events Support, Time Saving Technology and our Sustainability initiatives. Having recently returned to San Francisco, my goal is to share this philosophy with our planners and colleagues, while continuing to foster new and meaningful relationships. Through these efforts, I aspire to create an environment that is both welcoming and enriching to our multi-generational workplace, including our colleagues, event planners and suppliers.

Intentional, Visionary, Stay Curious

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: From day one, the meetings industry felt like home. The dynamic nature of meetings resonates with my passion for travel, amplifying my fulfillment as I connect with diverse people and ideas. What makes it truly special is when clients become lifelong friends. Each encounter holds its unique magic; there’s no playbook for what we do. We forge connections, achieving remarkable feats together. Every moment is a testament to the power of human connection. The meetings industry isn’t just a career; it’s a vibrant community where friendships blossom, and together, we create unforgettable experiences.

Welcoming Strategy: To ensure inclusivity, I strive to actively listen to diverse perspectives, foster open communication and respect individual differences. Getting to know others and what inspires them is key. Creating a supportive environment where everyone’s contributions are valued and acknowledged is important. I always try to lead by example, demonstrating kindness and inclusivity in my actions and language. Prioritizing environments where everyone feels heard, respected, and empowered to participate fully. I would hope that I create a culture of acceptance and belonging, both in professional settings and everyday interactions, enriching experiences for others.

Next Goal: My next goal is to focus on nutrition. As we age, prioritizing nutrition becomes paramount. Embarking on a nutrition-focused journey presents an opportunity for holistic well-being. By prioritizing my thirst for knowledge and understanding of nutrition, I am embracing the power of a healthy body and mind. With dedication and education, I know my nutrition goal can become a cornerstone of vitality, empowering me to thrive in every aspect of life.

Personalization, Connections, Energy

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I was standing in the elevator after a weeklong conference. I observed quietly, surrounded by attendees’ lively chatter. The pivotal moment arrived as they enthusiastically proclaimed it the best week of their lives! Feeling a surge of satisfaction, I recognized that we had not merely achieved but surpassed our goals. The shared sense of fulfillment and joy affirmed the success not just of the conference but our entire year’s work. In that elevator, a routine ride transformed into a profound realization—a testament that my efforts had genuinely left a lasting impact on those we sought to connect with.

Welcoming Strategy: I take time to express genuine interest in each team member by getting to know their interests and strengths. I foster a collaborative and supportive atmosphere where everyone’s contributions are valued, and ensure that communication channels are open, encouraging team members to share their ideas and concerns freely. With diverse interests in mind, we carefully plan our events to prioritize a sense of belonging. By integrating inclusive sessions, activities, and ensuring representation from various perspectives, we aim to foster an environment where every attendee feels acknowledged and warmly welcomed. Beyond professional realms, I love to surprise and delight people with small acts of kindness they don’t expect.

Next Goal: I consider myself fortunate to be in an exciting phase of my career, where I’ve had the opportunity to explore diverse experiences and travel the world. My main objective now is to share my passion and industry expertise with my team and the next generation, aiming to inspire them, promote their growth, and instill in them a love for the industry that mirrors my own.

Events Lead, SpartanNash

People-First, Fun, Purposeful

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I planned events that successfully spotlighted SpartanNash’s people-first culture, including quarterly companywide town halls, which earned me a national award from venue partner Live Nation; a frontline associate recognition event called Circle of Excellence; the SpartanNash Summit for senior leaders, which earned another national award; multiple corporate holiday parties; an office grand re-opening party; mass volunteer events for corporate associates; and family-focused events. I was also selected to be a part of the Women Grocers of America (WGA) Board–Emerging Female Leaders (EFL) this past year.

Welcoming Strategy: I personalize the attendee event experience and show appreciation for event staff where possible. For example, I execute “Magic Moment” experiences for company frontline winners at the annual Circle of Excellence awards, taking a break in our award programming to celebrate an associate’s hobby or talent with a fun surprise. I also surprised event staff with a special champagne toast on the last evening of the company’s annual Summit conference, and chose custom gifts/swag items for attendees.

Next Goal: I had an unconventional path to the meetings industry by starting as an executive assistant. My next step is to pursue certifications, including the CMP, to support future events.
