Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I moved to Chicago and started in the hospitality industry in 1996 and everything about it really got me–the people, the events, the camaraderie, the work hard/play hard approach of just enjoying what you do. And, ultimately, the fact that what we do brings people together to solve problems while creating jobs makes it so compelling.
Welcoming Strategy: I make it a point to be the first one greeting attendees at the door, no matter how big or small the event–I think that first impression of feeling welcomed is exceptionally important and sets the tone for their experience. In general, I just try to approach things by being as real and authentic as possible with everyone.
Next Goal: Embracing technology, including AI, to make myself and my events better. And stealing from a friend, trying to reach out to people when you think about them rather than letting the moment pass you by.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: My first job in a hotel was right out of college. I had moved from Michigan to Florida to be closer to my family and got a job as a receptionist in the sales office as I worked on my master’s degree in a completely unrelated industry. Like so many of us, I quickly fell in love with hospitality. Every day was different, and I interacted with customers and guests from all over the world. I loved being a part of creating experiences for our guests. I can’t say there was any one moment, but it didn’t take long for me to know this is where I belonged. I would say I didn’t choose hospitality–it chose me.
Welcoming strategy: To work in hospitality, you must have a passion for making others happy and find joy in serving others. Over the past 15 years, I have learned that once you become a part of The Ritz-Carlton, The Ritz-Carlton becomes a part of you. The Gold Standards have become my true North, guiding my approach to our guests, our customers and my team. It starts with the genuine care and concern for others as stated in our credo; creating unique, memorable and personal experiences as stated in our Service Values; and applying the principles of trust, honesty, respect, integrity and commitment according to our Employee Promise.
Next Goal: I came into my current role just over a year ago, and thus my professional focus is on perfecting how I can best support my stakeholders. There is nothing that brings me greater fulfillment and satisfaction than driving results, making a difference, and helping others fulfill their career aspirations. On a personal level, I want to embrace the gift of travel and see as much of the world as I can, starting with a long overdue trip to Italy and Slovenia this spring.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: It’s hard to pinpoint one exact moment because just when I think I know the industry, it’s inspirational people find ways to surprise me in the most wonderful ways. A few memories that make this industry special. The first time I planned Cvent CONNECT, I had a realization that planning events for event profs and helping inspire and elevate their roles with event technology and data, could make a huge difference. Once, I spoke on the general session stage in front of 1,500 and I remember thinking–wow, we are really pushing ourselves to help this industry in a meaningful way. What we do matters.
Welcoming Strategy: My team is special and world-class at delivering experiences. No other way to put it. They are the reason I love what I do. I approach life and people management through a vivacious and empathetic leadership lens. When you treat your team like they are actual humans and family, you form a close bond together in the trenches. Remember their milestones, birthdays, celebrate their life moments, encourage PTO and life beyond work. It’s important.
Next Goal: Global domination! Just kidding 😊. In addition to finalizing a global ROI tracking system I’m leveraging within my total events program, I’d like to try to help others by elevating a template others can use within the industry. When we succeed, I think we should help share more of those best practices across the industry. Less gatekeeping and more elevating each other. Rise and lift, baby! I also have a personal goal to learn more AI tools and establish an AI success process for my team. We all have to start somewhere, and we cannot ignore that AI will save us a lot of time.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Being an individual who requires a fast paced, problem solving, ever changing environment in order to stay engaged and fulfilled, I felt this the moment I was given the opportunity to enter the Las Vegas hospitality industry in a sales manager role and almost 40 years later still feel the same. Collaboration with my colleagues as well as the planning team to drive the success of each program was and is still rewarding. I also value the life-long business relationships built on trust that have evolved into friendships whether they are peers or customers.
Welcoming Strategy: Firstly, I think about how I would want to be treated and recognized. People want to be recognized and heard so truly listening, spending uninterrupted time, staying focused on them and getting to know each individual for who they are is key. At Hard Rock, one of our core mottos is “Take Time to Be Kind”; and that resonated with me from day one.
Despite my crazy schedule, I always find time for my colleagues, customers, team members, mentees, past employees who need guidance and most importantly friends and family. Lastly, remembering special occasions with a personal note or card, a gift that would be special to them.
Next Goal: This isn’t my next goal but a career long goal. I have been fortunate throughout my career to have several incredible mentors who encouraged my growth and challenged my decisions. One of them in particular changed the course of my life twice and in most positive ways. I will be forever grateful because I am where I am today thanks to him! I believe that it is my responsibility each and every day to pay it forward. As a female leader, I stand on the shoulders of so many who came before me and it is my responsibility to continue to be a strong and powerful voice for those who will come after me.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In 1997, I secured Detroit’s largest convention—Lions Clubs International—for 2004. I learned that if you surround yourself with a great team, have an inspiring plan and engage with the community, you can win! By pulling together the local, state and international chapters (and meeting some pretty incredible people along the way), showing your dedication and admiration to their purpose—you can achieve anything. This convention brought 10,000 delegates to 72 hotels and helped keep Detroit working. I discovered the day we won the bid that that is what I do—keep the people of my community working. What an adrenaline rush!
Welcoming Strategy: My mom’s phrase for me growing up was be fun, fair and firm and I use that to this day! With my team, I want to make sure they know they are heard, and they are acknowledged for their achievements, and coached for their challenges. It will never be me that made things happen, it is us. The strength of the team is a direct reflection of the strength of their leader. At my events, I try to think of all the smallest of details so that the total picture comes together with a wow! I have the innate desire to do it better than whatever they have experienced before. In life, I enjoy every new person I meet from the grocery store to the Board table. I believe each person needs to be understood and respected for who they are, and above else—to be heard.
Next Goal: At this stage in my career, having moved from a large urban Hotel to a ski and golf resort company, I am proud to say that I am still learning! I want to take all that I have learned in my career and try to make an impact for Boyne Resorts. I truly respect the culture and the vision of our President and CEO, Stephen Kircher, and want to continue on this journey he is sharing with his entire team. I have had the pleasure of planning several events for him and his senior leaders, and I thrive on being able to surprise them every time. Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: After extensive postponements due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I was finally able to experience the emotion of love meeting tradition with the first South Asian wedding celebrated at JW Marriott Cancun Resort & Spa. Our team created the most beautiful family reunion with four full days of celebration. This challenged my team’s abilities as event planners, but felt especially rewarding to bring together vibrant Indian and Mexican cultures, colors, and flavors.
Welcoming Strategy: Smile! My everyday mantra is to smile and life will smile back at you. Especially in the events industry, unforeseen circumstances have the potential to derail hard work, so facing it with a great attitude makes all the difference. I encourage my team to embrace this philosophy of optimism, and to see new possibilities in every difficult situation.
Next Goal: I am fortunate to be pursuing my next big goal: leading the Sales, Marketing and Revenue Department in the opening of the first Marriott All-Inclusive hotel in the world. Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: My first corporate event was an auto launch, and while I played a very small role in executing, being able to see the collaboration come alive with the palpable energy and excitement of the dealers and how it was going to revive their businesses was the hook. Creating something that didn’t exist to change the world for the audience has driven me ever since, because that’s the power of an event—to create positive change. I’m just one person, but being in this industry means the privilege and responsibility to impact change at scale.
Welcoming Strategy: Understand that everyone is more than who you see in front of you. We all have challenges, talents and dreams as well as the unique needs that go along with them. We don’t build events for robots, we build them for humans and should anticipate their needs as individuals. As a leader, every interaction is an opportunity to help someone be at their best, be of service, and provide a little more joy along the way. Volunteering is a great way to put that credo into action.
Next Goal: Expanding the audience and the final touches for an amazing experience for our marquee event, Zero Trust World, is at the forefront right now. In general, I’m looking forward to building out our event team and event portfolio so we can drive our company’s growth even faster.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: Working onsite during the build for the World Congress on Obesity in Malaysia and seeing all the different event partners coming together to deliver such an impactful event. This went from the Convention Bureau and local association that supported the initial bid to the exhibition stand builders and freight forwarders that delivered event collateral onsite and created signage to get our attendees to the right place! It was amazing and a privilege to be able to see an event from conception to delivery over a number of years.
Welcoming Strategy: Ensure that everyone has an opportunity to express themselves (or not) at every point of our working day. We all work differently, for example, some people excel when put on the spot to create ideas and problem solve. Others like to have 10 mins to themselves to consider the pros and cons and to put forward an idea. All approaches bring benefits to a team and this should be welcomed. Lastly, you need to have a sense of humour to get through the day and life in general. I don’t think I could get through work or life without people having a laugh with me.
Next Goal: Changing the approach to event KPIs and measuring the value of events. The trickiest one on the list is member perception of events. One of my favourite questions to get me through work (and life!) is ‘why does this matter?’ This approach works well for events–why does the look and feel of a name badge matter, why does cabaret vs. theatre setup matter in a room? These are trivial decisions but when you can easily understand the purpose of these decisions and how event attendees engage throughout the day it adds so much value to what you are delivering and how best to measure success.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The size of Walmart afforded me an opportunity to explore many career opportunities that I didn’t know existed. I was blessed early in my career to have amazing leaders and mentors who encouraged me to find my passion within the company. I didn’t know what corporate event planning was, but soon learned it was everything I was passionate about at Walmart. It combined my love of people, company culture, experiences, and community. My days and projects vary from creating unique moments for internal associates, to creating corporate events and connections throughout the community. I love telling people I have the best job at Walmart.
Welcoming Strategy: I was born and raised in the South, so sweet tea and southern hospitality have always been a way of life for me. Everyone has a desire to feel included and special. I am very genuine. Hospitality is about others not myself, so I look for the moments, I listen for the clues. In both my professional and personal life, I am known for bringing people together, helping people, and creating moments. My favorite quote is by Maya Angelou, who said “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Next Goal: On a professional level, I am looking to move into a leadership role within Corporate Events. Advancing in my career to the next level is one of my top priorities. I’m also focused on helping to take the events team to the next level by embracing technology, incorporating sustainable practices, and establishing process improvements that could be streamlined for the betterment of all within our organization and our support entities. As far as personal goals, the pandemic afforded me extra time to find an outlet that taps into my creative side. I am learning to set aside purposeful moments to explore my love of creating pottery.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: My first job was working for Hyatt. They would send new sales managers to training programs with other new hires. From the moment I stepped into that room at 23, I knew I was where I was supposed to be. I felt a sense of belonging and pride. I was sitting in a room full of people who were also getting started in the industry and I just wanted to learn as much as I could. I’ve been fortunate to have mentors along the way who only validated my desire to aspire to provide the best experience to customers.
Welcoming Strategy: Providing an experience that is memorable whether at an event or in the workplace will always be a recipe for success. It’s always at the forefront of my mind as I approach even the basic tasks. How can we make the experience unique for our guests and our employees? As a team, a strong culture is the foundation.

My pivotal experience occurred during the execution of a multifaceted event—comprising a fundraiser, fashion show and silent auction—with an ambitious target of raising $20,000. The event not only achieved its financial goal but surpassed it significantly. Witnessing the resounding success of this ambitious event grew my conviction that the meetings industry was my true calling. The experience demonstrated my aptitude for orchestrating complex events and solidified my sense of belonging within the meetings industry.
Welcoming Strategy: I prioritize inclusivity by respecting individuality within my team, events, and daily interactions. My commitment to making everyone feel welcome stems from understanding diverse communication preferences. Next Goal: Having achieved my goal of planning international meetings, my focus has now shifted to the next ambitious endeavor. Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: It was 2018, and I was eight months pregnant. I was exhausted from that and months of planning our largest event of the year. We were onsite managing a week-long conference with over 150 meetings/social in that dry heat of Arizona. Watching the attendees enter our final Friday celebration full of joy, awe and inspiration made every long hour worth it. I was so proud of our lean team and our vendor partners (Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Studio F and Encore) and I knew I didn’t want to do anything but create joy through experience.
Welcoming Strategy: For me, it’s important to value everyone’s collective input while still leading and making key strategic decisions. Assigning stretch projects to team members so they have a chance to enhance their skills through experiences that are challenging has been a successful approach on our team, and helps build confidence, especially for those at the beginning of their careers. I believe it is important to allow people to work independently, but always know that I am right there to provide guidance and support, have their backs if a mistake is made and sing their praises loudly when they have a win.
Next Goal: Right now I am focused on building out a firmwide events team and operational structure to support over 700 events across our 32 offices worldwide and taking stock in the professional growth of our team members and giving them the opportunities to thrive. Additionally I am the mother to a fun loving, energetic 6-year old daughter, and my goal is to show her that women can not only succeed but thrive in fast-paced, high-demanding careers.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I’ve wanted to be part of the events world for as long as I can remember. Being the organizer in the group from the very beginning, I’ve always felt there was an art to gathering. During my first internship, I remember being energized by my first onsite experience. Even as an introvert, the room full of people making connections and coming together around a common purpose filled my cup and I knew it was an industry I had to be a part of.
Welcoming Strategy: For me, joy comes from creating experiences. I’ve always prioritized surrounding myself with those who are aligned and when I find them, I hold on tight! I do this through making little moments special and celebrating wins, big and small. Next Goal: The goal of doing more good is always at the forefront at WholeHearted. We are developing new activations and working on a tool to measure the impact of our groups. This year, I hope to expand the team so we can serve more clients (and more in-need communities) in cities across North America. It’s going to be an exciting year for the industry and I can’t wait to watch it unfold.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I’m a collaborator by nature, and when I started my sales career, I immediately knew the group sales segment was where my passion lay. I firmly believe in our founder, Conrad Hilton’s vision of “filling the earth with the light and warmth of hospitality” and that world peace can abound through travel. This holds true in the meetings and events space. What I love most is that these meetings can profoundly impact the industries they represent. Isn’t that a beautiful gift- making the world a better place, one meeting or event at a time?
Welcoming Strategy: Brene Brown says it best: “Connection is the energy…between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued: When they can give and receive without judgment.” During the height of the pandemic, I learned more about the importance of intention and conscious leadership concepts. My focus is to provide an environment where those I’m engaged with feel heard, seen, respected, and appreciated. I’ve noticed that as I have changed my approach, those around me have, too.
Next Goal: I am passionate about building tomorrow’s leaders today through compassion, inclusivity and love. We have an opportunity to support the evolution of our industry through our rising leaders, which is done through mentoring, coaching, and being emotionally accessible leaders ourselves. I actively mentor several rising leaders within Hilton along with SITE and GBTAs mentorship programs.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: The moment I knew I belonged in the events industry was during one of our annual trade shows in Las Vegas at the Sands Expo. Previously I had only produced mid-size events, and this show brought more than 24,000 attendees. I remember reviewing my onsite checklist during my flight and thinking there is no turning back now. As I walked the bare show floor watching the exhibits come up all of my anxiety turned to excitement. Once we were cleared to open the exhibit hall that was when I fell in love with the industry. Seeing the transformation of an empty hall to a beautiful space with cutting edge technology, built in just days, left me motivated to do it again and again.
Welcoming Strategy: Making my team members and peers feel welcome is something I take so much joy in doing every day. You never know what someone else is going through in their personal lives or at work. It’s important to smile and to take a few minutes to ask how are you doing, or is there something I can do to help. Taking time to show gratitude and remaining approachable is one way I work to make the people I interact with every day feel welcome. We all want to be appreciated and feel seen. I truly believe whatever kindness you have shown to someone else, especially a colleague or peer, will be passed on creating a ricochet effect throughout the environment.
Next Goal: My next goal is to inspire more family members to travel. We truly gain so much knowledge about people and other regions while traveling. There is so much to be explored through unique experiences, many of which can impact your life in so many positive ways.
My plan is to be a better version of myself, greater than I was last year. To make more of an impact within the industry, to volunteer more and to share more of what I’ve learned with the next generation.

With no formal training in events, I had plunged into the deep end and not only survived but thrived, discovering an innate talent for this dynamic industry. The moment I was laid off marked a profound realization: it was time to forge my own path. That day, I knew I had the grit, skill, and passion to succeed, so I embraced my true calling.

Next Goal: The pandemic was a curveball, halting our growth in a world where live events vanished overnight. Yet, we adapted, embracing virtual events to not just endure but thrive. Post-pandemic, following a record-breaking 2023, our focus shifts to scaling new heights. I’ve invested in myself with a business coach and am on a quest to become a thought leader, actively seeking speaking opportunities and amplifying our social media footprint. We’re bolstering our team, refining our core processes and rejuvenating our business development strategies. This is more than recovery; it’s a strategic leap towards realizing the full potential of our enterprise.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: NYC Tourism hosted a dinner for our top tech clients at a stunning restaurant in the Meatpacking district in November, and I led a discussion about how planners can use generative AI tools like ChatGPT in their work. Two hours later, the dessert was gone but the conversation showed no signs of slowing down and I knew I had found “my people.” Meeting professionals are smart, driven by the pursuit of excellence in their work and relentlessly curious.
Welcoming Strategy: Creating a feeling of welcome means meeting people where they’re at, not where I’m at. It’s about embracing diverse perspectives and backgrounds, actively listening, and fostering an environment of respect and inclusivity. At events, this translates into thoughtful, accessible design that considers various physical and cultural needs. In life, it’s about showing empathy, being open to learning from others, and prioritizing genuine connections over superficial interactions. Ultimately, making everyone feel welcome is about creating spaces where differences are celebrated.
Next Goal: I’m deeply invested in exploring how generative AI tools will transform an industry focused on human connection. Consider what we can achieve once freed from mundane tasks. What complex problems might we solve using algorithms that discern intricate patterns in data? My goal is to speak on bigger stages in the next year to share the message that AI has thousands of use cases for our businesses, that any of us can harness its transformative potential, and that we can approach these tools with curiosity and wonder instead of fear.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I knew I was in the right industry when a world awaited me. This career has afforded me more opportunities and exposure than I could ever imagine. I have met First Ladies, Commanders of Navy vessels, U.S. Secretaries of State, and astronauts and worked with every occupation on the planet that holds conferences. I knew I belonged in this industry when my contributions made a difference and I helped bring people together to affect change. Every day is a new opportunity to create a community and that’s exciting. Every day, I still belong to this industry. How lucky am I?
Welcoming Strategy: Always start it with a smile. That’s important. Warmth and invitation can break down any barrier and make people feel like they belong. It’s not enough to just listen to people, you need to make them feel heard. Give them a welcome seat at the table and allow them to be fully present. In my life this is important. I raised a family alone and taking time to listen to each other at the end of our day has been essential to ensure that we were always in sync with each other. It made us all feel important and heard.
Next Goal: I am a goal-oriented person by nature. I always want something to look forward to. No matter how large or small, I love to stretch. However, I am passionate about securing our future hospitality and meetings industry workforce. The young people entering it now are smart, poised, courageous and confident. From the college students I speak to, the CHLA Scholarship candidates I interview and the young professionals who just joined us, I am passionate about mentoring them. I want to nourish and inspire these young people so they will grow and pay it forward. It’s so important and it matters.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: As co-founder of the Association for Women in Events (2015-2020), my purpose crystallized. A decade into the events profession, I sought my “tribe,” noticing a lack of female leadership. In 2014, an incident underscored the need to address challenges like pay equity and differentiate the events industry from mere “party planning.” Failing to find a group advocating for women’s voices, we co-founded the Association for Women in Events. With 2,000+ members, it championed women’s professional progress, prioritizing pay equity, industry recognition and a supportive community. Initiatives, like the Events Industry Sexual Harassment Task Force, ensured influential voices and supportive community.
Welcoming Strategy: Creating an inclusive environment is paramount to me. Guided by Vernā Myers, (the First VP of Inclusion Strategy at Netflix), her insightful philosophy profoundly shapes my approach. According to Myers, “Diversity is being asked to the dance. Inclusion is being asked to dance. Equity is having a turn picking the DJ. Belonging is being able to dance how you want.”
This powerful framework not only influences my team but also resonates in the events I organize and in life. By valuing diverse perspectives and fostering inclusion, I aim to cultivate environments where everyone feels a profound sense of belonging and can authentically express themselves.
Next Goal: In 2023, co-teaching at UNC Charlotte’s Meeting & Event Planning Certificate program and hosting a webinar for Association TRENDS brought immense joy. This resonates with my unwavering dedication to continuous growth and positive transformation in the events industry, upholding the highest standards of integrity.
Throughout my ongoing journey, I am committed to immersing myself in conference planning, fostering meaningful connections through exceptional events, and championing diversity, equity, and inclusion industry-wide. My goal is to elevate my role in shaping the strategic aspects of meetings, ensuring that diversity is not only acknowledged but celebrated in every event. I prioritize crafting innovative experiences for attendees, fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I was working in the hotel industry as a Front Office Manager and loved working with all the planners and clients that came to the hotel for their meetings. I loved the interaction and seeing the end results of all their meetings. At this point is when I realized that I wanted to be a part of the events industry. Now 20 years later and still loving it 🙂.
Welcoming Strategy: I love working with my team and I love getting to know them all, which I feel is truly important. I love having all the team members create a slide about me which highlights details about them. It could be their family, pets, what makes them happy or a simple phrase–whatever they would like to share. Another key for me is personal development and training. I think what makes a team stronger is when we all work together and help each other grow and learn. For the events and my personal life, I strongly believe that being personable, sharing a little bit about yourself, and listening are key factors to being successful in both avenues. As a manager once told me many times, you need to build your brand. What is your brand going to look like?
Next Goal: I love what I do and I would love to teach the younger generation of event professionals.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: For me there wasn’t a single moment. It’s been a thousand little moments over the past 11 years. Whether it’s the “how are you’s?” or “I’m here to help”, from people I admire in the industry or the moments of success, joy and vulnerability with trusted industry friends. To pick just one feels like a disservice to all of the wonderful people and connections that have been and are so pivotal in making me feel like I truly belong in this industry.
Welcoming Strategy: I try to create a space where people can be themselves fully. By listening more than I speak, leading with compassion and limited judgment. I try to leave room for people to make mistakes. For my team this looks like literally speaking the words “You belong here, you got this job for a reason, don’t hide, mistakes are ok.” For my events, it means knowing my audience and asking what they need. In my life, it’s trying to always be a soft place for the people I love to land and listening, even if it is hard.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I knew I was meant to be in this industry the first time I walked into a corporate event to assist a friend’s mom when I was in college. My passion to design and the desire to connect people came together that day. But the moment I truly felt that belonging was the first general session my team and I put on for over 5,000 people. The scale, the excitement, the passion in the room, you could feel the vibration of it in your bones. My belonging in this industry came from the feeling of belonging my team brought to life for those 5,000 people that day!
Welcoming Strategy: It’s all about personalization! Truly connecting with people means understanding their unique desires, needs and challenges and then collaborating to meet those desires and minimize those challenges. For events, it’s about understanding your demographic and curating bespoke experiences that meet the needs and address the challenges of that demographic. With my team and in my life, I make sure I’m truly present and ensuring I’m creating time and space for each individual person. Making people feel welcome goes beyond the obvious. It’s the little details, the extra time and commitment from you that shows them how welcome they truly are.
Next Goal: One of my two main goals this year is obtaining the sustainable events professional designation. I truly believe climate change is one of the most existential threats to our world and I want to make sure I am doing my part to minimize the impact our industry has on climate change. I am also focused on helping the new planners on my team obtain their CMP and get more involved in the industry by volunteering on local industry boards and committees. I love to see my team grow and become changemakers in their own right in our industry!
