The fast-paced world of meeting professionals relies on action heroes who perform live without a net day after day. They often operate in the background unless something goes wrong and they have to swoop in to save the day with a powerful contingency plan to the agenda. Each year, we shine the spotlight on these superheroes as our way of celebrating excellence in the service of inspiring more brilliance. Our Meeting Professionals of the Year Awards are the Tony Awards of the business events industry and honor outstanding strategic, logistical, creative and career performances.

We put out the call for nominees in July and received a record number of applicants and some of the most heartfelt testimonials this side of Dolby Theatre. Nomination trailers included:

“Lisa Wilson (American Nurses Association)’s ability to streamline processes, foster team collaboration and deliver outstanding results showcases her commitment to excellence while her forward-thinking approach has elevated meeting planning standards.”

How’s this for a dramatic impact? “Laurel Eldridge (BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee) has been instrumental in evolving our company culture by transforming corporate events to uplift both remote and in-person employees.”

This one had all the feels. “Dominique DeWitt (Wounded Warrior Project) is ensuring accessibility is a key component in event and meeting planning. She has identified a gap in resources and knowledge in the hospitality industry and has developed training to educate her hospitality fellows on how to source and plan events to ensure there is equal access to any event. She joined leaders at The White House for the announcement from the U.S. Department of Transportation on ensuring safe accommodations for air travelers with disabilities using wheelchairs.”

In the big-budget world of event production, a cadre of our winners are being celebrated for watching the bottom line. “Mia McMahon (Dine Brands Global)’s passion, tenacity, and ability to bring themes to life under tight budgets set her apart and make her an admirable leader.”

We applaud all of these meetings and events leaders for their brave performances in and out of the ballroom. Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge with the Smart Meetings Community. You can read claim-to-fame moments and motivational secrets in the following pages.

Carol Galle wearing blue shirtCarol Galle, CMP, VEMM

Co-founder, President and CEO, Special D Events

Specialties: Meetings and Events for Corporations, Foundations, Nonprofits and Academia

Claim to Fame: I am an organizer, not just of events, but of people. I understand the value of personal connections whether the purpose is to learn, further a career or feel connected to the industry you represent. An example is my idea to launch the Detroit Events Council in 2018. I pitched it to a colleague and we gathered a representative sample of local event profs as founding members. Our purpose is to collaborate to ensure all Detroit event attendees have a great experience in our city and provide a supportive space for Detroit events community members. We have 2,900+ members!

Motivational Secret: Always be open to new ideas, especially those outside your industry or niche. I purposely seek a diverse group of organizations as clients because I love the variety of discussions and content. Whether I am researching a healthcare client to help develop their conference goals or listening in the back of the room to a business author speak to franchise owners, I always find nuggets of inspiration. The minute you put on blinders and say, “I don’t see how this applies to me,” it’s time to hang up your name badge. ChatGPT, anyone?

Mandi Graziano in floral blue shirtMandi Graziano

Vice President Global Accounts and Author, HPN Global

Specialties: Sales Kick Offs, Sales Training, President Club Trips, Sales Incentive Trips, Customer Advisory Boards, Wellness Retreats, Executive Board Retreats, User Groups

Claim to Fame: Super connector and meeting pal cheerleader. I am obsessed with connecting people and saying the name of someone in a room that no one else is saying. Building the bench of our meetings industry is really important to me. We can all take part in this by spotting talent and suggesting they take that next leap, mentoring, volunteering or taking a quick call from someone who wants to “pick your brain.” I love to lift up people up by shouting out innovation, recognizing unique actions and celebrating new perspectives. We all need our own personal built-in cheerleader. Why not make it your meeting planner pals.

Motivational Secret: I see humor and joy in all situations. I literally feel like my brain is constantly thinking in short SNL skits. There is always something funny about every situation, even the most difficult ones. There is always something unique. There is always a way to be creative. I work hard at making space in my brain to be open to see these things. Take breaks. Declare reading time. Ask questions of other generations. Listen deeply and listen so hard to hear beyond the conversation. When you keep your antennae up for the possibilities around you, magic can happen.

We’re all striving to do our best, and finding humor in mistakes, collaborating on solutions and moving forward together makes the experience better for everyone involved.

Problem solving, creativity, surprises and forward thinking are just a few of my superpowers.

Motivational Secret: I think about the elements of an event that will create the most impact for attendees, stakeholders, and, frankly, for my team, and how they’ll react. I live for the moments when I’m running around an event juggling many tasks all at once and someone takes the time to stop me and thank me for the experience, the times I hear positive buzz in the hallways, and the gasps from the audience when we pull back the curtain for a big reveal. Embracing challenges as opportunities keeps me resilient. I regularly assess progress and set small, achievable goals to maintain momentum. Celebrating even the smallest successes reinforces my result- and goal-driven mindset. Learning from every experience enhances my effectiveness and creativity. Lastly, surrounding myself with supportive, driven people keeps me energized and innovative every day.

Jessica Maldonado, CMP, DES

Senior Meetings Manager, Innovation and Management, Inc.

Specialties: Small- and Large-scale Educational Seminars, Conferences and Trade Shows

Claim to Fame: As a multi-faceted planner, I have developed a diverse skillset, with emotional intelligence being a key strength. I strive to ensure all interactions, from colleagues to stakeholders and vendors, are positive and enjoyable experiences where people look forward to working with me. By taking the time to deeply understand the goals, needs, and personalities of clients and participants, I can curate experiences that foster meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas allowing me to develop and maintain genuine, sincere connections and relationships.

Motivational Secret: My main goal is making a positive impact every day, regardless of motivation. I want to be a productive contributor to my clients and colleagues, my friends and family, and my community and truly enjoy being able to do that through meeting planning. Finding applications for your skills that professionally and personally inspire you will allow you to continue to fuel your drive and creative fire. My greatest challenge is normalizing shying away from chasing short-term, externally focused motivation and instead seeking long-term inspiration to use our knowledge and skills to better ourselves and the world around us.

Kelly Marcavage wearing light purple shirtKelly Cook Marcavage, Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA)

Specialties: SPFA’s Annual Convention and Expo, SPFA Board of Directors Meeting

Claim to Fame: Meeting planning is like riding a bicycle. You never forget how to do it. In my case, in 2011 I closed the chapter on my meeting planning when I joined SPFA to run their certification program. Fast forward to 2020. I was asked to add meeting planning to my responsibilities. Even though nearly 10 years had passed, the tasks hadn’t changed too much. It was a matter of adapting the fundamentals in the post pandemic world. Muscle memory played a big role. The success of a meeting planner is based on the success of everyone she surrounds herself with. Working with a team who sport a ‘can do’ attitude goes a long way!

Motivational Secret: Each day new opportunities (and sometimes challenges) give me the chance to tap into things I’ve learned along to way to continually improve what has been done and  find ways to make our events better than they have been in the past. Brainstorming with colleagues, listening to members and trying to remember to keep everything in balance entices me to start each day with a fresh set of eyes. With a goal of being the best that I can be it is easy to stay motivated to achieve that goal each day!

Claim to Fame: My versatility and adaptability. Whether working with emergency room physicians, travel writers, airline executives or manufacturers, I tailor each event to meet the unique needs and preferences of my clients. I excel at delivering high-quality events, even on tight budgets, ensuring success across various styles and meeting types. I have a calm demeanor under pressure and can manage crises effectively so I can continue to create unforgettable experiences.

Motivational Secret: I stay motivated by embracing a passion for continuous learning and creativity. Each day, I find inspiration in the unique challenges and opportunities each project presents. Reflecting on past successes and learning from setbacks keeps me resilient and innovative. Engaging with colleagues and clients provides fresh perspectives and encouragement. Maintaining a balance between organization and self-care ensures that I consistently bring my best, resilient, and creative self to every project.

John R. McKinnon, CSEP

President, Voila Events

Specialties: Corporate Meetings and Events, Experiential Incentives and Associations

Claim to Fame: My most recent memorable milestone was handling the Chinese Delegation and President Xi Jinping’s public facing events during the Asia-Pacific Exchange Cooperation

(APEC 2023) Leaders’ Week here in San Francisco in November of last year. I led the

team producing his only public event during the conference, which included California’s

Governor Gavin Newsom, numerous ambassadors, governors, and a litany of high-profile

attendees from the corporate world. I worked for months with the U.S. Secret Service and the Chinese Security Services during dozens of walkthroughs, rehearsals and multiple contingency plans, insuring a successful and safe event.

Motivational Secret: Be kind. As my grandmother always used to say, “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” And it’s true. Just be nice. I always choose kindness, politeness and general flattery as opposed to hostility and demands. Do you want to set a positive tone for all of your interactions, whether it’s with vendors, attendees, or clients, or do you want to create a negative tone to your entire event? If you do the former, the creativity and success will come naturally, whereas the opposite holds true for the latter.

Specialties: Annual Brand Conferences, Investor Meetings, Analyst Meetings, Internal Department Meetings, Board Meetings, Lobbying Meetings, Food and Beverage Showcases, Brand Committee Meetings, Companywide Socials and Integrated Events

Claim to Fame: I was given advice by my boss a few years ago that is simple but resonates with me: “be easy”. There’s this joke that I’m a flexible type A personality. While I love perfection and flawless execution, I’m well aware that events are live and living things that 100% rely on human resources, so there is always room for error. It’s how you recover and the solutions that are found which is what keeps events “interesting.” I thrive on to-do lists (which sometimes read: see other to-do list), keeping the optimism high, tempering expectations and reminding myself and others that this is their opportunity to have fun, shake things up and bring their best selves to the event.

Motivational Secret: Beyond my morning cup of coffee…I have two little boys at home (9 and 4) who are my true motivation. They love curated experiences (like gamifcation during bedtime when trying to incentivize them to brush their teeth), and are also very quick at giving “feedback” on food and beverage and their overall “attendee experience.” If I can make them happy, logistics surrounding an actual event are a breeze. I’m a hostess by nature, my biggest motivation is watching ideas come to life, collaborating with great teams, and knowing that I’m giving the gift of impactful moments to meeting attendees. While it seems like small things, I like to ensure that all attendees walk away with something unique to them at our programs—be it action items to become better businesses, a new connection with another attendee or vendor that lasts a lifetime, a customer service experience that is second to none or even a small token or swag item that is going to proudly be on display in their home or business.

Claim to Fame: Securing the most favorable business terms for my customers while preserving the strong relationships that ConferenceDirect has built with our hospitality partners. Motivational Secret: I focus on maintaining well-being in every aspect of my life because feeling good is a natural motivator. Celebrating successes and participating in industry events energizes me, as they always offer opportunities to learn, exchange ideas and share stories. I find great satisfaction in understanding others’ challenges and helping them find solutions. I especially enjoy conversations about hotel contract language and negotiations. Conference Manager, CEM Solutions Co.

Specialties: Short Courses, Small and Large-scale Conferences, Association Meetings

Claim to Fame: The key word applicable to my life and work is respect. I respect myself by setting and accomplishing strenuous personal goals. I graduated college early and moved to D.C. to work in political fundraising events for the House of Representatives. I worked with exceptional people, made great connections and wonderful memories. Also, I respect my bosses and our clients, knowing what’s at stake: money, reputation, relationships. If I’m given responsibility for something, it gets done. This determination helped secure my promotion to conference manager within six months of working in the energy industry in my home state of Texas.

Motivational Secret: Again, there’s a key word to maintaining creativity and energy for me: organization. By being organized in my work and private life, I can be proactive rather than reactive, and more efficient. My time is spent with more positivity and control, and that contributes to creativity. I look forward with excitement and anticipation to my workday rather than anxiety, knowing I have prepared for upcoming tasks and will have time to brainstorm, read books and articles and listen to podcasts that will stimulate and encourage me, not to mention being a better listener for clients, bosses and coworkers!

I’m naturally curious and love to learn because there are always new ways to solve old problems. I put myself in the shoes of the attendee and always strive to keep it fresh, it’s important that the experience always feels new and engaging.

Motivational Secret: Every successful event motivates me for the next one. I love seeing all of the planning come to execution. When an attendee leaves an event wanting more, I know I’ve done my job. Hearing from stakeholders that “this event was the best one yet” is what drives me, constantly innovating to make each experience better than that last.

My reputation for innovative, creative, out-of-the-box events as well as efficiency with time, budget and talent have afforded me amazing opportunities in the events industry, including developing and forging brand new programming and branding for event programs within the Lifestyle industry. I’m known for my networking acumen and team-building initiatives. I like to give back to the community and help train and mentor new planners as well. I was honored to receive the Volunteer of the Year award from our local Chamber of Commerce a couple of years ago. The positive connections I’ve built within the community are rewarding and impactful.

Whether the event experience is for four or 4,000, the end result is the same–I want our guests to be positively impacted from attending the event.

Motivational Secret: Personally, and professionally, I’m always learning and always growing. I’m constantly researching and educating myself on industry best practices and trends. I share that with my team, and we turn ideas into action. I’m motivated and passionate to be working in a new niche industry within the events world. I also try to stay grounded and balanced. I have the privilege of knowing the events I am developing and executing these days are truly impacting people’s lives for the better. It’s inspiring to see how taking the event skills and concepts from the more lavish types of events I used to plan and reinterpreting those “event blueprints” on a different level to develop wellness programming to support active adults enrich their lives in their “third age” of life is incredibly rewarding.

Claim to Fame: I am a big picture thinker, who loves and values the details. Where some see complex challenges, I see opportunity! In 2023, I led our team in the strategic design, content development and production of the 18th World Conference for the Deafblind International Association. An event with 40% of its audience requiring access accommodations for individuals with duel sensory impairments, including 120 speakers who are deafblind. We developed tech and process solutions to ensure the comfort and engagement of all attendees, including all the guide dogs. Since delivering this event, I have spoken at numerous industry conferences including IMEX, CSAE and MPI Chapter Events about the importance of accessibility at events, and how planners can embrace these challenges. In my career, I have delivered thousands of events, but this is some of the work I am most proud of. It is my mission to keep this important conversation going.

Motivational Secret: Having Impact! Creating forums that not only bring people together, but designing engagement experiences that create change.  As planners we have the privilege of seeing the impact of our work when watching as a new business relationship is made, a colleague becomes a friend, or witnessing someone change their mind…that is so powerful and is the magic of events for me.

Motivational Secret: Embracing the power of visualization. I picture the event’s success and use my mind’s eye to carry out the details. I also treat others the way I desire to be treated and that usually fuels how I am treated in return.

David Twigger wearing purple shirt and blue sport coatDavid Twigger

Creative Director/Founder, Vermilion Events

Specialties: Corporate Meetings and Events, National Associations, Annual Conferences, Special Events, Non-Profits, Annual Events

Claim to Fame: It could be being sought after to design the national award ceremonies for ILEA, NACE and more of our industry organizations. The over a dozen industry awards for design, innovation and collaboration. The success of Vermilion Events and surviving the pandemic. The launching and success of the Twigger Time podcast which celebrates all aspects of the special events industry and its creative people. But I think my proudest claim would be the success of my staff/interns and team. Nothing makes me more proud than to see them grow and prosper, to see our industry continue to inspire and motivate people.

Motivational Secret: My secret is my diversified experience. One of the few who has worked on both sides of the industry, logistics and design. Over 20 years in hotels, then DMC, third-party planning and private event venues. I take my love of design and then work that through logistics. Just a pretty room won’t do for Vermilion Events. It must also flow, work with production and make sure all the design isn’t lost during the event. For myself, it has to be the work/life balance. I stress this for my whole team. There will be days where we work those long hours, but making sure my team enjoys the life they work so hard for.

The insights they bring daily drive our continued evolution. Establishing a work environment based upon trust and collaboration is key!

Motivational Secret: No matter how yesterday was, every morning begins a new day. I try to wipe any doubts out of my mind, and then I start from a place of positivity. I map out what I want to accomplish from my day every morning over coffee. As one of my icons, Peyton Manning, once said, “I never left the field saying I could have done more to get ready and that gives me peace of mind.” To me, this means always bringing your best, but incorporating what you learn that day as well.
