Destination Description

Located in the southernmost part of Mexico, sharing a border with Guatemala, Chiapas has a climate natural for its rainforest, averaging over 3,000 mm of rain per year. But the region is not one note; it has been singled out for having a complex and varied topography. The area is dappled with foggy mountain ranges that cultivate cloud forests, estuaries producing aquatic vegetation and, sedimentary formations in the mountains made of limestone, shale and sandstone. Groups can visit the Canon del Sumidero National Park, the Cascadas de Agua Azul Biosphere Reserve and the Montebello Lagoons, where they can see turquoise-blue waters surrounded by a forest. History buffs will want to take in the prime areas to explore Mayan ruins, including the notable Palenque site.

Chiapas is also has a wealth of activities and attractions. The area offers some great locations for watersports such as water rafting, kayaking and swimming.
